What was it like for Armstrong, the megastar, to travel to Ghana in the midst of the independence and freedom movements of both countries? How is that experience reflective of the many African Americans past and present who have engaged in similar journeys? And what does it mean, with specificity, when people say the roots of jazz are in Africa? Curating this exhibition has set me on a personal journey as a Black woman, as an artist, and as a seeker of stories. Through this exhibition, I hope our guests will make their own connections, conduct their own archival sleuthing, stand in front of a work of art, listen to glorious sound, or dance into a new understanding of Louis Armstrong’s legacy and how independence and freedom lives within them.”

Building upon the successful Armstrong Now residency and signature programs, the project will engage with contemporary musicians and visual artists to share their work in New York and Accra, following in Armstrong’s footsteps. The museum offers guided tours of the trumpeter’s historic home, giving visitors an inside look into the life he and his wife Lucille led alongside the Corona Queens community. The Center champions musicians and artists alike through their Armstrong Now Artist-in-Residence Program – where artists are given the opportunity to research and rehearse new work based on thematic content provided from the Armstrong Archives. Previous residents include Samara Joy, Immanuel Wilkins, Soul Science Lab, esperanza spalding, Steven Salcedo and more. Moreover, the Center integrates their work with local Queens residents through community activations including a year-round young trumpet learning program and their Justice Arts initiative for formerly incarcerated youth.
