STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — As thousands across the five boroughs celebrate Veterans Day, New York City is making it easier for former service members to secure affordable housing.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, Mayor Eric Adams announced the expansion of the Municipal Employee Housing Preference, which now includes military veterans.<\/p>\n
As of Nov. 15, all new affordable housing lotteries listed on the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development\u2019s Housing Connect website<\/a> will include a 10% preference, up from 5%, for eligible city employees and military veterans, making it easier for them to obtain affordable housing.<\/p>\n \u201cMunicipal workers and veterans should be able to live in the city they love. With this new policy, we\u2019ll make it easier for city employees and veterans to live, raise a family, and retire in the five boroughs,\u201d said Adams. \u201cThis Veterans Day, we\u2019re not only honoring our veterans and public servants with our words; we\u2019re honoring them with our actions, too, and giving back to the people who give their all every day for their city and country.\u201d<\/p>\n In order to qualify, municipal employees must submit proof of employment, like a recent paystub or tax document, while veterans must submit a DD214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) or a Statement of Service.<\/p>\n \u201cService to city and country deserves the dignity of a stable home,\u201d said New York City Department of Veterans\u2019 Services Commissioner James Hendon. \u201cBy expanding the preference to 10%of new Housing Connect opportunities for municipal workers and military veterans, we\u2019re turning gratitude into access \u2014 so the people who keep New York running, and those who wore the uniform, can find an affordable home in the city they serve.\u201d<\/p>\n If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
