A rush-hour commute turned deadly on Wednesday evening when a 25-year-old man stabbed 59-year-old Mesias Lojano multiple times while on a northbound J train pulling into the Woodhaven Boulevard subway station, according to the NYPD.<\/p>\n
“It is shocking to me,” one rider told NY1.<\/p>\n
“I take this train every day,” Angel Ramize told NY1. “I usually don’t see that type of violence around here.”<\/p>\n
Prosecutors charged Jyrell Thomas, from the Bronx, with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Investigators said the attack was unprovoked.<\/p>\n
“I just don’t understand why everybody is so mad and why everybody wants to kill each other,” Ramize said.<\/p>\n
Surveillance video showed people at the Woodhaven Boulevard subway station in Queens swiftly exiting down the stairs, seemingly trying to figure out what had happened. Some were seen running away; a handful of people were carrying young children.<\/p>\n
Other surveillance video showed first responders carrying the victim down the stairs and then performing CPR. Lojano was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in critical condition, where doctors pronounced him dead.<\/p>\n
His neighbor, Francesca Martinez, who said she had lived near him for more than a decade, told NY1 that he lived with his son and that they were very close.<\/p>\n
“He was an excellent person; we never had problems on anything,” she said.<\/p>\n
Many regular J train riders said they are still processing the news.<\/p>\n
“It’s definitely an eye-opener that you should definitely be more aware when you come on, when you take the train onto these platforms. You never know who’s out there and who’s in the wrong state of mind,” one rider said.<\/p>\n
“You never know. Everybody, just be careful walking in the streets. Keep your eyes open. If you see something, do something,” Ramize said.<\/p>\n
An investigation is ongoing.
