Six candidates put their names in the running before the filing period closed July 28, but two have since dropped out, leaving four to vie for three seats.

Of the three current board members whose terms expire in January, Richard Zeck is the only one who filed for reelection. The other candidates that filed were Jude Annan, William Dinga, Laura Freund, Becky Nelson and Samson Williams.

Annan and Freund each confirmed to the Sun Post they are no longer running, though their names will still appear on the ballot. This leaves Zeck, Dinga, Nelson and Williams as the active candidates in the race.

The three candidates that garner the most votes this fall will take office in January 2027 and serve until January 2031.

For more information about elections and voting, visit sos.mn.gov/elections-voting.

The Sun Post reached out to candidates to compile this voter’s guide in advance of the general election. Should students be allowed to use their personal devices, or only those that are provided by the district?

Our technologies is changing I agree we need to change with the technology to enhance our kids. Education technology is a great resource for expanding students education. I believe with a great system to teach our students how to use their phones and when not to use their phone so they’re not a distraction and also resource at the same time it could be a good thing.

What is one policy or area of focus you think Brooklyn Center Community Schools needs to improve, and what should the BCCS Board do to enact that change?

I truly believe in all Brooklyn Center Community Schools policy. I am a firm believer and safety. I believe safety comes first if we provide a safe place for our students and faculty to accomplish the goal of being great and taking advantage of all the opportunities Brooklyn Center has to offer.

In 2024, voters across the district approved a referendum to fund ten years of technology updates, enhanced safety and security systems for BCCS. Should students be allowed to use their personal devices, or only those that are provided by the district?

Technology should facilitate learning and not distract from it. Schools should provide equal access to district-approved devices and digital tools. Personal devices should be allowed where they are needed, and classroom expectations must be clear to ensure student focus, privacy and safety. Teachers should have the ability to determine when technology enhances instruction and when it should be put away. And we must do so that all students are prepared for a technology-driven world so that the ability to do so is universal, regardless of family income.

What is one policy or area of focus you think Brooklyn Center Community Schools needs to improve, and what should the BCCS Board do to enact that change?

One focus area should be student academic achievement and readiness for life after graduation. BCCS is already focusing on proficiency and growth, closing achievement gaps and preparing students for college and careers as district priorities. The Board could improve accountability by regularly reviewing measurable academic outcomes, increasing evidence-based academic supports and ensuring that resources are in place for students who need them most, and in the process establishing stronger relationships with families, educators, colleges, employers and community organizations to connect students with more pathways to college, careers and skilled trades.

In 2024, voters across the district approved a referendum to fund ten years of technology updates, enhanced safety and security systems for BCCS. Assess the district’s use of taxpayer dollars through this plan so far and explain what, if anything, you think should be adjusted.

The 2024 referendum authorized approximately $700,000 annually for ten years for technology, infrastructure, cybersecurity, safety systems and related training. Because this is a long-term investment, I believe strong oversight and transparency are essential. I would support annual public reporting that clearly shows how referendum dollars are spent, what projects have been completed, and how those investments improve student learning and safety. Before making adjustments, the Board should evaluate measurable results and community feedback. If spending is not producing intended outcomes, the Board should redirect funds within the voter-approved purposes toward the highest-priority student, technology, and security needs.

What is the best way for voters to contact you?

Email.

Richard W. Should students be allowed to use their personal devices, or only those that are provided by the district?

Technology is growing faster than the ethics and our understanding of the technology, at the same time our students must learn how to navigate the technology, at what age needs to be looked at by the school board this coming year. Our students already receive Chromebooks and smart phones use has a good policy regulating its use.

What is one policy or area of focus you think Brooklyn Center Community Schools needs to improve, and what should the BCCS Board do to enact that change?

The work is being done in the area of test scores growing for every Centaur. Staff and administration are implementing high quality programs in math and literacy. The Board must work hard on supporting this work. It is part of our mission and the Board must support these efforts and help remove barriers that face our students, their parents and our community.

In 2024, voters across the district approved a referendum to fund ten years of technology updates, enhanced safety and security systems for BCCS.
