{"id":362826,"date":"2026-10-02T13:32:30","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T13:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/362826\/"},"modified":"2026-10-02T13:32:30","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T13:32:30","slug":"news-12-bronx-issues-persist-one-year-after-partial-building-collapse-at-nychas-mitchel-houses-tenants-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/362826\/","title":{"rendered":"News 12 | Bronx | Issues Persist One Year After Partial Building Collapse At Nychas Mitchel Houses Tenants Say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">It&#8217;s been one year since an explosion in the boiler room of one of the buildings at NYCHA&#8217;s Mitchel Houses in Mott Haven c<a data-rich-text-hyperlink=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/brooklyn.news12.com\/im-grateful-to-be-alive-some-residents-displaced-following-partial-building-collapse-at-mitchell-houses\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">aused part of the building to collapse<\/a>, sending chimney bricks plummeting 20 stories to the ground.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cIt sounded like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom!\u201d said Dutch, one of the building&#8217;s tenants.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cI woke up my wife to tell her the building was coming down. I thought a car crashed,\u201d said Carlos, another tenant.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">No one was injured, but dozens of residents were displaced and <a data-rich-text-hyperlink=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/bronx.news12.com\/2025\/11\/23\/residents-at-partially-collapsed-nycha-building-offered-15-gift-cards-for-holiday-meals\/1nHfs04f1djgpY14vaHgVi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">without water and cooking gas for months<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cThey didn\u2019t have food for Thanksgiving. They couldn\u2019t eat hot meals,\u201d said Tai, a Mitchel Houses resident.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cThe Thanksgiving thing wasn\u2019t cool, but we still made it what it was as far as us being a community,\u201d Dutch said.  <\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">NYCHA says as of March 20, all 10 buildings at the Mitchel Houses have been re-piped and gas service restored.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">But residents tell News 12, other issues persist within the building complex. They say that the real issues that haven\u2019t been fixed are inside the building.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cThe elevators break every day in all of these buildings,&#8221; Tai said. &#8220;Every single day.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of homeless people going inside the building and they\u2019re staying in there,\u201d Carlos said.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Dutch says the smell inside the building reminds tenants of a similar smell before the collapse. <\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cNow when we get a funny smell everyone is like, is that gas, or is it going right?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">In a statement sent to News 12, NYCHA wrote, &#8220;NYCHA staff monitor the janitorial conditions at Mitchel Houses on a daily basis and will respond accordingly to ensure that janitorial standards are upheld. NYCHA works with law enforcement and agency partners to prevent trespassers and deter illegal activity in these buildings.
