The NYC Department of Education says it will investigate a teacher accused of commenting on TikTok, \u201cYeah, we don\u2019t support Jews here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Upon receiving a complaint from Jewish anti-hate groups<\/a>, the DOE immediately removed Meera M. Mangaroo from her classroom at the Bronx Writing Academy, a 188-student middle school in the South Bronx, pending a probe.<\/p>\n

\u201cHate has no place at New York City Public Schools, and we stand against all acts of antisemitism and discrimination of any kind,\u201d DOE spokeswoman Onika Richards said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Mangaroo\u2019s removal comes on the heels of Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s release of a report<\/a>, \u201cTackling Hate: The Mamdani Administration\u2019s Strategy to Combat Antisemitism.\u201d The citywide plan covers the public schools.<\/p>\n

Under the TikTok handle Bxgirlteach, Mangaroo listed several \u201cminority owned ice cream places to go to.\u201d<\/p>\n

When another TikTok user noted \u201cJewish is minority owned,\u201d Bxgirlteach replied, \u201cYeah we don\u2019t support Jews here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis allegation has been reported and referred for investigation,\u201d the DOE said, adding that \u201cthe views described are diametrically opposed to the values of New York City Public Schools. We expect all staff to maintain learning environments that are respectful, inclusive and free from bias, and we will take appropriate steps to ensure those standards are upheld.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moshe Spern, president of United Jewish Teachers, praised the DOE\u2019s swift response.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo say \u2018we don\u2019t support Jews here’ is pretty bad,\u201d Spern said. \u201cThat\u2019s not Zionists. That\u2019s not Israel. That\u2019s Jews.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several people gathered at a rally sponsored by the DOE\u2019s downtown headquarters this morning to protest the comments.<\/a><\/p>\n

The state licensed Mangaroo to teach grades 1 to 6 in September 2012, after a prior conditional license expired in 2007. Her salary in 2024, the latest posted on seethroughny.net, was $108,501.<\/p>\n

The DOE assigned Mangaroo to a district office pending the investigation.<\/p>\n
