MARCY, N.Y. (WBNG) — The family of Robert Brooks, an inmate beaten to death by officers at Marcy Correctional Facility, has reached a $24 million settlement with New York State.<\/p>\n
Brooks faced repeated assaults<\/a> from officers in a medical examination room on Dec. 9, 2024. He died at the hospital the next day. His death was ruled a homicide<\/a> in an autopsy soon after. Brooks was facing a 12-year sentence for a stabbing and had been transferred to Marcy that day.<\/p>\n The estate was represented by Faraci Lange, LLP. This settlement resolves all claims against New York State and the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision employees in connection with Brooks\u2019 death.<\/p>\n Ten officers faced charges in Brooks\u2019 death. David Kingsley was convicted of murder; five others pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Two pleaded guilty to lesser charges, and two were acquitted.<\/p>\n \u201cNone of us could stick up for him on Dec. 9, 2024,\u201d Robert Brooks Jr., Brooks\u2019 son, said. \u201cThis lawsuit was the only thing we could do to fight for my dad personally.
