11:55am: McCarthy is active for the Giants\u2019 Week 4 contest against the Cardinals and will operate as the third-stringer behind Winston and Haener. While ESPN\u2019s Adam Schefter (video link<\/a>) acknowledged McCarthy\u2019s playing time this year will depend on Winston\u2019s performance and McCarthy\u2019s own ability to pick up Nagy\u2019s offense, he did say there \u201cseems to be an agreement\u201d that McCarthy will play at some point in 2026. Technically speaking, that could simply mean McCarthy will appear in special packages or in relief of Winston, but the implication is that he is expected to be in the starting lineup at some point.<\/p>\n

07:24: In his first public remarks since being traded<\/a> from the Vikings to the Giants on Monday, quarterback J.J. McCarthy<\/a> admitted he was surprised by the move.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I got the call here, it was a shock,\u201d McCarthy said (via ESPN\u2019s Jordan Raanan<\/a>). \u201cI didn\u2019t anticipate it, but at the end of the day, it\u2019s an opportunity. It\u2019s an opportunity to take advantage of. And I love these guys already and I can\u2019t wait to do it for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Minnesota selected McCarthy with the 10th overall pick of the 2024 draft, but the Michigan product missed his entire rookie year as a result of a meniscus tear. His 2025 season featured generally uninspiring play amidst more missed time due to injury, prompting the Vikings to bring in Kyler Murray<\/a> to operate as their starting signal-caller. The club also re-signed Carson Wentz<\/a> and installed him as Murray\u2019s backup, relegating McCarthy to third-string duties.<\/p>\n

In that context, much of the football world was not as surprised by the trade as McCarthy himself. Still, the 23-year-old did not want to delve too deeply into the issues that led to his ouster from the Vikings, who very recently believed he could grow into their franchise passer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a multitude of things you could think of [why it didn\u2019t work out], but at the end of the day, it\u2019s all in the past,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd all I care about is what\u2019s important now \u2014 that next rep, that next meeting, that next game. And that\u2019s really all I\u2019m focused on.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Raanan previously confirmed the McCarthy acquisition has no effect<\/a> on the Giants\u2019 future plans for Jaxson Dart<\/a>. Instead, the move was seen as a low-risk opportunity to fortify a QB room that will be without Dart for the rest of the \u201826 campaign due to his own meniscus tear (along with an MCL tear and PCL issues). Outside of Jameis Winston<\/a>, the only other passer on the roster prior to the McCarthy trade was Jake Haener<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Giants just authorized a two-year, $13MM extension<\/a> for Winston in early September, and Jonathan Jones of The Athletic<\/a> says the former No. 1 overall pick will remain in the starting lineup \u201cuntil he loses the job.\u201d Per Jones, it will take weeks for McCarthy to become sufficiently comfortable with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy\u2019s playbook.<\/p>\n

Even if McCarthy does not see the field for Big Blue, Jones believes New York can recoup its investment in the offseason. While Jones\u2019 sources believed the Vikings were not going to be able to do better than a sixth-rounder in a McCarthy swap this year, Jones says the Giants could flip him in 2027 and get their fifth-rounder back if they are so inclined.
