NEW YORK (PIX11) — The NYPD has released new surveillance video as investigators search for two men accused of stabbing and robbing off-duty Detective Jose Mercedes<\/a> in the Bronx.<\/p>\n

The footage shows the suspects riding away together on an e-bike after the Friday afternoon attack in the Norwood section. Police said one suspect was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and dark pants, while the other appeared shirtless and wore dark pants.<\/p>\n

Police said Mercedes, 33, was near Rochambeau Avenue and East 206th Street shortly before 2 p.m. when the two men approached him. Investigators believe the suspects targeted the detective’s chain, stabbing and slashing him several times before forcibly taking it from his neck.<\/p>\n

“You think the police is not a human being, they can get killed anytime even if he has a gun,” one Bronx resident said.<\/p>\n

“That’s somebody’s husband, somebody’s father, somebody’s relative, and I hope he gets justice,” another resident said.<\/p>\n

Mercedes suffered injuries to his torso and leg but tried to chase the suspects before collapsing about two blocks away, police said. His family was outside Jacobi Medical Center on Saturday, where the detective remains hospitalized and continues to recover.<\/p>\n

“He is stable, and he’s better,” a family member told Cory McGinnis of PIX11 News.<\/p>\n

The Detectives’ Endowment Association said it is supporting Mercedes and warned the suspects they will be caught.<\/p>\n

“The perpetrators may think they got away, but they didn’t count on the full force of NYPD detectives searching for them,” DEA President Scott Munro said. “There’s nowhere to run and nowhere to hide.”<\/p>\n

Police said the suspects rode south on Rochambeau Avenue after the robbery. The investigation remains active.<\/p>\n
