{"id":36432,"date":"2025-11-11T21:18:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T21:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/36432\/"},"modified":"2025-11-11T21:18:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T21:18:12","slug":"dungeons-and-dragons-5-hour-play-initiative-opens-in-nyc-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/36432\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Dungeons and Dragons&#8217; 5-Hour Play &#8216;Initiative&#8217; Opens in NYC: Interview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cDungeons &amp; Dragons\u201d has been cool for a while now \u2014 or forever, depending on who you ask \u2014 but the iconic tabletop roleplaying game has recently achieved a new level of mainstream status: adaptations that are willing to explore the time it takes to play an actual campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOn one end of the \u201cD&amp;D\u201d-themed media spectrum, you have more \u201ctraditional\u201d the box office success of Paramount\u2019s \u201cDungeons &amp; Dragons: Honor Among Thieves\u201d and the love letter to the \u201980s version of the game\u2019s storyline built into the Duffer Brothers\u2019 \u201cStranger Things,\u201d which set to debut its fifth and final season on Netflix later this month. On the other, you have the immense popularity of actual-play TV series, like Critical Role and Dropout\u2019s \u201cDimension 20,\u201d and Off-Broadway hit \u201cTwenty-Sided Tavern,\u201d which use D&amp;D-style mechanics and real-time play to explore new IP and worlds created apart from that of \u201cDungeons &amp; Dragons\u201d maker Wizards of the Coast.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Initiative.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tJoan Marcus<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJoan Marcus<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSitting somewhere in the middle is the latest entrant into the \u201cD&amp;D\u201d-inspired genre, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/initiative\/\" id=\"auto-tag_initiative\" data-tag=\"initiative\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Initiative<\/a>,\u201d a five-hour long play opening at The <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/public-theater\/\" id=\"auto-tag_public-theater\" data-tag=\"public-theater\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Public Theater<\/a> in New York City on Nov. 20 and now set to run through Dec. 7. (See Variety\u2018s first-look images of the play in the pictures above and below.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWritten by Else Went and directed by Emma Rosa Went, the play \u2014 which will include multiple intermission and, for Saturday performances, a 90-minute dinner break \u2014 is described as \u201ca bittersweet reflection on adolescence at the dawn of the new millennium.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPer the Public, \u201cInitiative\u201d (named in a nod to a key component of \u201cD&amp;D\u201d gameplay) \u201ccharts the intertwined lives of seven teens from 2000-2004, as they become friends and more than friends, wrestle with their potential, face incalculable loss, and struggle to find their way in (and get out of) \u2018Coastal Podunk, California.&#8217;\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Initiative_526998.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tJoan Marcus<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJoan Marcus<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMuch of the throughline of the play \u2014 which stars Off-Broadway newcomers Olivia Rose Barresi as Clara, Greg Cuellar as Riley, Harrison Densmore as Ty, Carson Higgins as Lo, Andrea Lopez Alvarez as Kendall, Jamie Sanders as Tony and Christopher Dylan White as Em \u2014 centers on the group\u2019s \u201cD&amp;D\u201d league, and four critical portions of the show are devoted to their time spent playing together in character, as well as how the game acts as a central motif for their real-life journeys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI think the very initial seed of it was actually, in my first ever playwriting class, we were asked to write a scene, sort of of a gesture of kindness or love,\u201d \u201cInitiative\u201d playwright Else Went told Variety. \u201cAnd I wrote a scene about a bunch of people playing \u2018Dungeons &amp; Dragons\u2019 in a basement who are interrupted by a phone call that a tragedy has happened, a car accident, and then they sort of hold each other and work through the impact of that and then return to the game as a space of safety. And then that thought evolved and evolved and had a gravitational pull of all these other elements of my own life in high school in this small town, and building community through collaborative storytelling \u2014 because \u2018D&amp;D\u2019 is a type of theater \u2014 and then the play just grew outward from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Initiative_a0ac10.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tJoan Marcus<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe initial concept for \u201cInitiative\u201d was written by Went in 2016, and now-director Emma Rosa Went and star Barresi collaborated with Went for that first version of the show in high school. During Went\u2019s fellowship at Playwrights Realm between 2018-2019, Went expanded that script into what eventually became the five-hour final product \u2014 a big swing to take in the theatrical world as attention spans have notoriously decreased among audiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe expanded the action and accordioned it out and included all of these other people and experienced their stories in regular sort of rolling time, and consequently the play got much longer,\u201d director Rosa Went said. \u201cAnd then we realized that that was actually the theatrically exciting container for it, and that it felt intrinsically right for the story of these young people taking place over their high school career, to actually watch them age over the four year period, over the durational timeline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWent and Rosa Went have been in residence at The Public for roughly the last year and \u201cInitiative\u201d was first programmed there two years ago, giving them a \u201cvery long, generous runway\u201d to prep the show, including four weeks of rehearsal throughout 2024 and four more weeks of rehearsal that began this October after casting was finalized earlier this year. That meant that some cast members had been familiar with their parts for a few months and others for several years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIn terms of process \u2014 and I feel this both for my character, Clara, but also for Andromeda, my \u2018D&amp;D\u2019 player character [in \u2018Initiative\u2019] \u2014 I would say that the last nine years since I first met the character has been a process of building the rings around Saturn, is how I see it,\u201d Barresi said. \u201cI\u2019ve taken a lot of time to find small things \u2014 songs, images, \u2018D&amp;D\u2019 trinkets that I have from my \u2018D&amp;D\u2019 real life \u2014 to build every meteor in this ring that is around the character that I play. So I feel insanely lucky, and I feel like we would all agree with that, to have had as much time as we have had \u2014 be it nine years, six years, a couple months, whatever, to sort of be able to find each space rock and bring it in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile those subtle bits and pieces of the performances are a key part of the play, the actors also needed to focus on a great deal of blocking and physical movement over the course of the five hours, including multiple choreographed fight scenes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s athletic. It requires the full breadth of my being \u2014 emotionally, psychologically, physically,\u201d said Cuellar, who plays Riley, the show\u2019s Dungeon Master, and is charged with hundreds of lines of narration. while in motion, to get the actors and audience through the \u201cD&amp;D\u201d campaigns. \u201cSo I try to create a sense of arc, especially for the aging and in between every school year. Something sort of evolves that I have in the back of my mind of vocally, what is happening, physically, how the person is changing. So I\u2019ve really tried to track that out. And from there, the great thing about it is that even though it\u2019s long, Else has done a phenomenal job of just taking care of the actors so that I can step into the role. And if I just allow my instrument to flow through the lines of it, I really ultimately get to where I need to go by the end of the play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs for whether non-\u201cD&amp;D\u201d fans will enjoy the show \u2014 and find it to be worth its five-hour runtime \u2014 the creative team has taken care to make it accessible without losing its potential die-hard audience either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s also just a beautiful way in which the humor permeates it,\u201d Lopez Alvarez, who plays Kendall, said. \u201cAnd Greg is doing amazing, amazing work with voices and physicality that really brings it to life. I think that anytime that we encounter \u2018D&amp;D,\u2019 it fleshes it out a little more. So you start with a very basic like, \u2018We\u2019re playing a game! What are we doing?\u2019 And then it expands into the scene that you saw today, which is this is fully realized, \u2018We are playing this game. We know how it works.\u2019 And I think that the audience watching it, by then will be like, \u2018I understand what\u2019s happening.
