MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) \u2014 Major companies are preparing to testify under oath before the New York City Council on Monday morning about AI power players.<\/p>\n
The hearing comes amid growing warnings about just how powerful, and potentially dangerous, this technology could become.<\/p>\n
All 51 council members will participate and get to question industry leaders about safety and risks.<\/p>\n
According to City Council Speaker Julie Menin, at least four major companies will testify, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and Meta.<\/p>\n
Menin says aside from Meta, the firms confirmed their attendance after being warned they could be issued subpoenas. <\/p>\n
The hearing will focus on the risks of artificial intelligence after recent warnings from whistleblowers and executives, along with reports of A-I agents trying to hack government systems.<\/p>\n
Council members are expected to introduce a series of bills.<\/p>\n
The proposals include requirements such as a human \u201ckill switch\u201d that could shut down A-I systems, and procedures for reporting safety incidents.<\/p>\n
Another bill would give New Yorkers the right to sue companies for certain foreseeable harm.<\/p>\n
This comes as the debate continues over how much to regulate artificial intelligence, with President Trump calling it super intelligence and creating a task force to make sure America remains dominant.<\/p>\n
Monday\u2019s hearing is set for 11 am.<\/p>\n
It remains unknown whether SpaceX AI will attend after the city council speaker issued a subpoena.
