{"id":364852,"date":"2026-10-05T15:10:07","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T15:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/364852\/"},"modified":"2026-10-05T15:10:07","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T15:10:07","slug":"2-face-sentencing-on-fed-charges-in-shooting-off-duty-cbp-officer-in-nycs-fort-washington-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/364852\/","title":{"rendered":"2 face sentencing on fed charges in shooting off-duty CBP officer in NYC&#8217;s Fort Washington Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two men who were convicted on federal charges connected to the July 2025\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nyc-shooting-fort-washington-park-cbp-officer\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">shooting of an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer<\/a>\u00a0in New York City face sentencing Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez and Christhian Aybar-Berroa were convicted federally of possession of ammunition by an illegal alien.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The two still face a host of state charges, including assault, attempted robbery, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon. Mora Nunez, the alleged shooter, also faces attempted murder charges. They&#8217;ll be back in state court to face those charges in November.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Monday morning, dozens of agents packed a courtroom in Lower Manhattan for their sentencing on federal charges.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/video\/suspects-indicted-in-shooting-of-off-duty-cbp-officer-in-nyc-full-news-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Police said the off-duty CBP officer<\/a> was sitting with a friend near the Little Red Lighthouse at Fort Washington Park just before midnight on July 19, 2025, when the two were approached by Mora Nunez and Aybar-Berroa, who were riding a moped.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One male dismounted the scooter, displayed a firearm and approached the two who were just trying to enjoy the city, like so many of us do during the hot evening hour,&#8221; former Mayor Eric Adams said after the shooting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Authorities said Mora Nunez shot the off-duty officer in the face and forearm, but the officer managed to return fire, hitting Mora Nunez in the leg and the groin.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Homeland Security said Mora Nunez and Aybar-Berroa were both in the country\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/video\/dhs-shares-update-on-cbp-officer-shot-in-nyc-full-briefing\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">illegally and had criminal records<\/a>\u00a0at the time of the shooting.
