Brian May<\/a> says Queen<\/a>\u2019s touring days are over.<\/p>\n

In a new interview with The Times<\/a>, the 79-year-old guitarist revealed that he decided a year and a half ago that he no longer wanted to spend extended stretches on the road. The realization came after a close family friend died while Queen were touring the US, and May learned he couldn\u2019t simply leave the tour for a few days and return.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made a decision 18 months ago that I didn\u2019t want to tour again,\u201d May said. \u201cA close family friend died when we were in the States, so I said to my tour manager, \u2018I\u2019ll just nip home for a few days and come back.\u2019 She looked me in the eyes and said, \u2018You know you can\u2019t do that.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI love to play, I love to travel, but the trade-off is sacrificing your freedom,\u201d he continued. \u201cI have a wife, grandchildren and a lot of astrophysics I want to do, so I\u2019m thinking maybe 50 years is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comments mark a firmer position than May offered earlier this year, when he ruled out Queen shows in the US<\/a> while leaving open the possibility of performing elsewhere. Queen + Adam Lambert<\/a> haven\u2019t played together since wrapping their \u201cRhapsody Tour\u201d<\/a> with a February 2024 show in Tokyo.<\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t mean Queen are disappearing from the stage entirely. May said he and Roger Taylor remain interested in creating something \u201cfairly revolutionary\u201d and floated an immersive Queen experience inspired in part by Sphere in Las Vegas<\/a>. He said he sketched out an entire Queen production after visiting the venue, though his concerns about the use of artificial intelligence have complicated the idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do want to do something fairly revolutionary,\u201d May said. \u201cNot as ABBA did [with digital avatars], but along those lines.\u201d He added, \u201cI think an immersive experience is still on the cards and it could conquer time and space, but currently you can\u2019t make it without AI and I have serious misgivings about that.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Brian May says Queen\u2019s touring days are over.
