{"id":365426,"date":"2026-10-06T03:14:32","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T03:14:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/365426\/"},"modified":"2026-10-06T03:14:32","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T03:14:32","slug":"man-who-died-while-in-nypd-custody-was-hospitalized-after-having-withdrawal-symptoms-cops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/365426\/","title":{"rendered":"Man who died while in NYPD custody was hospitalized after having withdrawal symptoms: cops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2026\/10\/04\/man-54-dies-in-police-custody-after-falling-ill-in-brooklyn\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A man who died at a Brooklyn medical center while in NYPD custody<\/a> following his arrest on drug charges was hospitalized after suffering apparent withdrawal symptoms, cops said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Reginald Newkirk was arrested Friday after officers spotted him holding a crack pipe in plain sight outside a Rockaway Parkway apartment building near Rutland Road in East Flatbush around 8:53 p.m. Friday, police said.<\/p>\n<p>He was taken to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.downstate.edu\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Downstate Medical Center<\/a> after falling ill around 6:45 a.m. the following day, but doctors cleared him about four hours later, and he was returned to the 67th Precinct, according to police.<\/p>\n<p>Newkirk was hospitalized a second time, this time being taken to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nychealthandhospitals.org\/locations\/kings-county\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kings County Hospital<\/a>, after he began exhibiting withdrawal symptoms around 2:05 p.m. Saturday.
