Jose Mercedes, his hand in a cast, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NYCPDDEA\/status\/2107261041423868330?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\">flashed a smile<\/a> and give a thumbs-up as Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and his fellow Finest applaud his recovery outside Jacobi Medical Center, video posted by the Detectives\u2019 Endowment Association shows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only are detectives here today, there\u2019s bosses here today, there\u2019s police officers, every rank is here today to support him leaving, because he\u2019s a real hero,\u201d said Scott Munro, president of the Detectives\u2019 Endowment Association.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Just days ago, Detective Jose Mercedes was stabbed multiple times in an attempted robbery while he was off duty. Seriously injured, he chased after the perpetrators. Today, union Board Officers and fellow Finest cheered him on as he left the hospital. <\/p>\n<p>The DEA continues to stand\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PoAQwaDgEx\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/PoAQwaDgEx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Detectives&#8217; Endowment Association (@NYCPDDEA) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NYCPDDEA\/status\/2107261041423868330?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">October 6, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The detective was retrieving something from the trunk of his black Mustang parked in front of a single-family home on E. 208th St. near Steuben Ave. in Norwood around 2 p.m. Friday when two men crept up behind him and tried to steal his gold chain, law enforcement sources said.<\/p>\n<p>The 33-year-old victim was stabbed up to seven times, sustaining wounds to his neck and torso, as he fought off the would-be robbers, sources said.<\/p>\n<p>The two suspects fled on an e-bike, but the off-duty cop gave chase, pursuing them for about two blocks to Rochambeau Ave. near E. 206th St., where he collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe got stabbed, and he was chasing the guy,\u201d said a witness, who asked that his name be withheld. \u201cHe chased the guy, and that\u2019s where he collapsed, in front of the building where I was sitting.
