Fixing these problems, they added, would be out of their budget.

Now, during a fresh update to CB11 last month, city officials said that one key portion of the project between E. 94th St. and E. 107th Street could potentially get back on track one day—if it could receive “well over” $500 million worth of funding. “It’s a large amount of money,” a representative for the Parks Department noted.

As of now, it is essentially unclear as to where this money would come from, and presenters with the Parks Department described this work as “on hold until future funding is available.” It is, however, reportedly “in final design” and “able to be bid for construction once funding is secured.”

Without any such hefty infusion of funds, it appears that most of the work conducted on these dozen or so blocks of the Esplanade will involve routine sinkhole remediation, rather than the extensive modernization promised back in 2022.

Furthermore, the stretch of the Bobby Wagner Walk between E. 107th Street and 114th Street will also no longer undergo a similar overhaul process; it appears to be stuck in even more dire straits than the E. 94th Street to E. 107th Street portion, with Parks officials describing it as lacking funds and languishing in the “pre-design” phase.

However, the portion of the overhaul that runs from E. 117th Street to E. 124th Street has survived these drastic funding problems, with Parks officials anticipating that construction will begin early next year. A reworking of the E. 107th St. pier will also move forward around this time, although it will not include hoped-for bathrooms.

“This is a heated topic, [and a] long time coming,” CB11 Board Chair Adem Brija said at the beginning of the meeting. “A lot of frustration, a lot of broken promises, information that’s changed. I understand all of that.”

Yet he also urged his fellow board members to engage in cordial dialogue with the Parks Department and other project overseers, rather than rehashing the same “grievances” repeatedly; this would be necessary, he said, because Community Board 11 expects the city to provide monthly updates on the overhaul project going forward.

Yet local advocates remain discouraged. “It’s an issue of equity and broken promises to East Harlem,” a source with the nonprofit group Friends of the East River Esplanade told Our Town. “East Harlem deserves what other areas of Manhattan already have.”

A deferred rehabilitation of the Bobby Wagner Walk, the neglected stretch of the East River Esplanade that begins…

[38
128,4514,9,24,63,129,131,130
post-365606","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-the-bronx","tag-bronx","tag-jack-ahern","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc","tag-the-bronx","tag-the-bronx-headlines","tag-the-bronx-news
["GET
