U.S. Rep. Rob Menendez (D-8), Mayor James Solomon, and Hudson County Executive Craig Guy all attended the event along with Compass Pathways CEO Kabir Nath.<\/p>\n
Notably, their synthetic psilocybin drug COMP360 has been designated a Breakthrough Therapy<\/a> by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Therefore, Nath was confident of FDA approval, with clinic treatments beginning in early 2027.<\/p>\n \u201cThis space will be home for our Compass U.S. colleagues, working alongside the vibrant life sciences healthcare community in New Jersey. Mental healthcare is personal for me, as I\u2019m sure it is for many of you. It\u2019s touched my life in ways that have shaped my career, and it\u2019s why I believe so strongly in our mission as a company,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n \u201cToo many are struggling to get better despite the treatments that are available. That can mean years of trying different approaches without finding the relief that they need.\u201d<\/p>\n He further stated that they have developed a synthetic psilocybin drug, COMP 360, based on \u201cvigorous science and clinical development.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSo how come it\u2019s Jersey City?\u201d Nath asked to laughter. \u201c \u2026 We join the vibrant, innovative life sciences community that\u2019s long been established here. I\u2019ve seen that for myself. I\u2019ve spent many years here living, working, and paying a lot of tax,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n During his remarks, the congressman noted that New Jersey has been acknowledged as \u201cthe medicine cabinet of our country\u201d due to their thriving pharmaceutical industry.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are so many across our communities, but specifically our veterans, who I know are hoping to unlock these treatments to get the help that they deserve. I\u2019m excited the government and FDA are being good partners, giving you breakthrough designation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n \u201cThere will be more work for us to partner on. I look forward to being an advocate for you.\u201d<\/p>\n Solomon of course also expressed excitement about choosing Jersey City as their base of operations, not just in New Jersey, but the entire country.<\/p>\n \u201cKabir said, \u2018Why Jersey City?\u2019 I wanted to respond it\u2019s self-evident!\u201d Solomon exclaimed to laughter. \u201cWe\u2019re obviously in a region \u2026 with such an investment in life sciences. That\u2019s something as an administration, we are committed to grow,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n Guy jokingly welcomed them to the neighborhood, Suite 340 at 30 Montgomery St. downtown, noting that his first job out of high school was located right next door.<\/p>\n \u201cIn my former life as a lieutenant with the Jersey City Police Department, right down the block, 9\/11 \u2026 This building itself was a melting pot of first responders trying to help the people,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n \u201cThose people today still suffer from their mental illness. There\u2019s a PTSD component.So many members of the local police Department suffered from PTSD.\u201d<\/p>\n Nath said their synthetic psilocybin treatment would be individually administered in clinics as part of a six-hour experience. Patients would be observed by a psychiatrist who would be there as a precautionary.<\/p>\n He further stated that the treatment would have to be administered one to three times a year to maintain the effects.<\/p>\n \u201cEventually, if it becomes widespread, you can imagine group sessions just like happenings in the underground,\u201d Nath noted.<\/p>\n He noted that with underground psilocybin, often referred to as \u201cmagic mushrooms\u201d or just\u00a0 \u201cshrooms,\u201d there is plenty of risk involved: \u201cYou don\u2019t know what you\u2019re getting.\u201d<\/p>\n Additionally, Nath said the criminalization of small quantities of natural psilocybin for personal use \u201cmakes no sense to me.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe recreational side will continue to exist and co-exist in parallel,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n Nath said they have a medical FDA-approved model different from the legal shrooms model in Oregon<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cBy going through the medical model, it will be up to us to negotiate with insurers and with Medicare and Medicaid to make sure it\u2019s covered,\u201d he explained, also indicating\u00a0they\u2019re eager to work with them to make it affordable.<\/p>\n Nath recognized that right-wing billionaire Peter Thiel<\/a> was an early investor, though also pointed out that his firm now owns less than 1 percent of the company.<\/p>\n \u201cThe psychedelic community \u2026 has a lot of interesting supporters. I was in DC last week \u2026 Mental illness is one thing you can still talk to both sides of the aisle about,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n Nath explained Hackensack Meridian Health<\/a> hospital might be where their synthetic psilocybin drug could be administered locally since they\u2019ve been working together.<\/p>\n State Senate President Nick Scutari (D-22) championed the New Jersey psilocybin bill<\/a> that facilitated that. During the process, the bill was amended<\/a> to remove decriminalization and regulations that would empower local businesses.<\/p>\n The grassroots advocates<\/a> who initially supported the initial bill were generally not happy with the changes.<\/p>\n The legalization of psychedelics is part of a trend where President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2018s (R) administration see the benefits, as well as the profits, that could be made from making synthetic pills.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n
