MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – The Riley County community gathered for its Veterans Day parade in Manhattan.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s nice to have people recognize, you know some recognition and people saying \u2018Thank you\u2019 and everything for it,\u201d said Air Force and Army veteran Kevin McCush. \u201cPeople actually care, that\u2019s what it seems like. It makes it like people care.\u201d <\/p>\n
Several schools, organizations and community members came together to celebrate and thank veterans.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe military is what protects us and what keeps us safe and free and all the things that we enjoy,\u201d said Junction City High School Senior Army Instructor Richard Hodgson. \u201cSo it\u2019s just great that we\u2019re celebrating it for those maybe who haven\u2019t served, at least they appreciate it. <\/p>\n
\u201cIn order to do stuff like that you\u2019ve got to have support from family members and people back home to do it,\u201d McCush said. \u201cThat\u2019s where all of this comes into play to help support all that. And so the soldiers can do their job.\u201d<\/p>\n
The parade provided students with a way to learn more about their military and understand the country\u2019s past.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re not going to learn unless you hear it directly,\u201d said Army veteran Eszter Blair. \u201cThe more we can talk about it with the younger generation, the more that history won\u2019t go away.\u201d<\/p>\n
Junction City High School JROTC members Valeria Vargas and Isabella Adams-Bennett shared what it meant to them.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are allowed to represent those veterans who have came before us and have helped defend our country,\u201d Vargas said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt shows our citizenship and how loyal we are to the people who have fought for our country and who have done so much for us,\u201d Adams-Bennett said.<\/p>\n
The route went through downtown Manhattan, featuring hundreds of participants.<\/p>\n
