{"id":365728,"date":"2026-10-06T11:02:07","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T11:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/365728\/"},"modified":"2026-10-06T11:02:07","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T11:02:07","slug":"deadline-looms-for-nyc-homeowners-to-file-for-pied-a-terre-tax-exemption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/365728\/","title":{"rendered":"Deadline looms for NYC homeowners to file for pied-\u00e0-terre tax exemption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday is the last day for New York City property owners to file for exemption from the city&#8217;s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/pied-a-terre-tax-second-homes-kathy-hochul-nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pied-\u00e0-terre tax<\/a>, despite ongoing legal battles challenging the surcharge.<\/p>\n<p>Residents who got a notice in the mail have until midnight to prove their property is their primary home, or face surcharges on their upcoming tax bills due Jan. 1.<\/p>\n<p>The new tax, which targets pricey second homes, has been marred by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nyc-pied-a-terre-tax-restraining-order-lifted\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">legal drama<\/a>\u00a0and setbacks on multiple fronts.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, a Staten Island <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/video\/judge-strikes-down-nyc-pied-a-terre-tax-rollout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">judge ruled<\/a>\u00a0the city mishandled the rollout by unfairly shifting the burden to thousands of homeowners to prove their basic residency and ordered officials to redo the process.<\/p>\n<p>The city filed an appeal, which put the ruling on hold.<\/p>\n<p>Two other legal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/pied-a-terre-tax-nyc-homeowners-court-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">challenges<\/a>\u00a0were also filed last week, arguing the taxes are unconstitutional because they target only nonresidents.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the ongoing legal drama, the Mamdani administration is refusing to delay its rollout.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gov.
