One hundred fewer people were shot in the city through the first nine months of the year, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch<\/a> said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The 594 shooting victims are down from the previous low of 694 people shot during the same time frame last year and in 2018 \u2014 and is the lowest since the NYPD created its current crime-tracking system, Compstat<\/a>, in 1994.<\/p>\n

In another historic low, murders are also down in the city so far this year, at 73, beating the previous record of 79 set in 2017, Tisch said at a One Police Plaza press conference.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese historic results continue to be driven by our precision policing strategy,\u201d Tisch said, \u201ctaking illegal guns off the street, dismantling the gangs driving violence, and putting officers exactly where and when the data tells us they are needed most.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayor Mamdani, meanwhile, said the declines show \u201cwhat it looks like to be unrelenting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd yet,\u201d he added, \u201cwe know that so long as there is a single murder, a single shooting, a single shooting victim in this city, that it is one too many.\u201d<\/p>\n

But while the overall crime rate \u2014 a compilation of murders and six other categories of felonies \u2014 is down 9%, areas of concern remain.<\/p>\n

Hate crimes, for instance, have spiked 13% up to 463 from 410 last year, with more than half of the total, or 245, labeled antisemitic<\/a>, police said.<\/p>\n

Crimes against Muslims also rose, from 18 to 32. Meanwhile, hate crimes over sexual orientation have seen an even bigger jump this year, rising to 52 from 34.<\/p>\n

Rapes have also increased, up 4% to 1,594 from 1,537, though police pointed out that 171 such crimes fall under the expanded definition of the crime under the Rape is Rape Act<\/a> enacted in September 2024. Twenty-five percent of all rapes reported this year involve crimes that occurred in prior years.<\/p>\n
