The York Theatre will present developmental readings of two new musicals this month:\u00a0Everyone Comes to Elaine\u2019s, starring\u00a0Mary Testa<\/a> as legendary NYC restaurateur Elaine Kaufman;\u00a0and Invisible: A New Musical, a sci-fi-comedy musical where H.G. Wells and John Hughes<\/a> collide.<\/p>\n

Everyone Comes to Elaine’s\u2014featuring a book by Asa Somers<\/a> and \u200bmusic and lyrics by Robert and\u00a0Steven Morris, and \u200bJoe Shane\u2014will be presented October 8 at 3 PM and October 9 at 1 PM. Directed by Jeff Calhoun<\/a>, the cast will feature multiple Tony nominee Testa (Oklahoma!<\/a>, Wicked<\/a>, Xanadu<\/a>), joined by\u00a0Todd Buonopane<\/a> (Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella),\u00a0Tony Crane (Between Riverside and Crazy<\/a>), Cooper Grodin (Masquerade), Julie Halston<\/a> (Our Town), Mel Johnson Jr (The Lion King<\/a>), Amy Keum<\/a> (KPOP<\/a>), Michael Kostroff<\/a> (Dog Day Afternoon<\/a>), Remy Laifer (Fiddler on the Roof\u00a0national tour), Tess Marshall<\/a> (Titanique), Pascal Pastrana<\/a> (A Beautiful Noise), and\u00a0Danny Sherman (Kinky Boots<\/a>). The creative advisor\u00a0is Tim Hotcher\u00a0with\u00a0music direction by Reagan Casteel<\/a>. Based\u00a0on a book by A.E. Hotchner, the musical\u00a0follows Elaine’s journey through love, betrayal, and eventual triumph.<\/p>\n

Invisible: A New Musical, with a book by David Hollingsworth and music and lyrics by David Orris, will be presented October 15 at 3 PM and October 16 at noon. Marc Kudisch<\/a> will direct a cast that includes Isa Antonetti<\/a> (Buena Vista Social Club<\/a>), Giuseppe Bausilio<\/a> (Hamilton<\/a>), Henry Beddoe (Only Hope), Brandon Cameron<\/a> (Hadestown<\/a>), Jessie Davidson<\/a> (SIX), Jordan Goodsell\u00a0(Masquerade), Dan Hoy<\/a> (Pirates! The Penzance Musical), Mya Rena Hunter (Les Mis\u00e9rables\u00a0national tour), Marina Jansen<\/a> (How to Dance in Ohio<\/a>), Dani Kucera (Pretty Woman\u00a0national tour), Alex Raymond Ross,\u00a0A.J. Shively<\/a> (Paradise Square<\/a>), and\u00a0Arif Silverman.\u00a0The readings will have musical direction by\u00a0D\u00e9a Thatcher<\/a>\u00a0with Michael Herlihy<\/a>\u00a0on guitar, Randy Fox on drums, and\u00a0Magda Kress\u00a0on bass. Kylie Cottrell is stage manager, Jay David is sound supervisor, and Amy Sapp is the creative producer.<\/p>\n

The musical is set in 1988 at Springborough High School, where Tiffany Madison and Tiffany Melrose reign supreme, along with rich uber-jock Chetwick Vandingwary. All the way at the bottom, two nerds, Griff Grabowski and Teddy Kemper, vie for the Tiffanies’ attention, much to the chagrin of their goth friend Hemlock. When Griff and Kemper attempt to become popular using science, but accidentally turn Griff invisible instead, all seems lost\u2014until the pair learn that being invisible may just have its advantages.<\/p>\n

The York is currently producing at The Theatre at St. Jean\u2019s at 76th\u00a0Street and Lexington Avenue.<\/p>\n
