BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) \u2014 Work is underway to speed up bus service along a pair of busy roadways in Brooklyn, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Much of Bay Parkway stretching from Avenue J to Shore Parkway, along with a portion of Cropsey Avenue from Bay Parkway to 26th Avenue, will be redesigned to include offset and curbside bus lanes.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re redesigning Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue with bus lanes and pedestrian improvements because Southern Brooklyn deserves fast buses, reliable service and safer streets,\u201d said Mamdani.<\/p>\n
The B6 and B82 run along Bay Parkway and are, respectively, the first and fourth busiest routes in Brooklyn, according to the MTA. The two bus lines serve 35,000 bus riders daily and have an average speed of three miles per hour at times.<\/p>\n
Pedestrian and traffic safety is also being considered by city officials. There have been 30 people killed or seriously injured between 2021 and 2025. In 2025 alone, two deaths were reported according to city officials. Around 40% of the incidents are the result of left-turn crashes.\u00a0<\/p>\n
To increase pedestrian safety, the city will add up to 18 median islands and extensions on Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue. Select intersections will also see painted curb extensions.<\/p>\n
Left-turn lanes will be installed at over 10 intersections, but some intersections will have left-turn restrictions added to improve the flow of traffic.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In 2026, similar redesigns to speed up bus service have been conducted on 34th Street in Manhattan<\/a> and Tremont Avenue in the Bronx<\/a>.<\/p>\n
