When Queen Camilla<\/a> married the then-Prince of Wales in 2005, she seamlessly stepped into the spotlight of royal life.<\/p>\n

Time and again, the 79-year-old has proven indispensable to her husband King Charles<\/a>, serving as patron to numerous charities and representing the monarchy at countless public engagements.<\/p>\n

A major part of her role involves connecting with people from all walks of life \u2013 something at which she naturally excels, thanks to a lesson learned from childhood.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Growing up, Camilla was taught never to let a conversation fall flat. Her parents, Major Bruce Shand and Rosalind, encouraged their children to actively engage in social events.<\/p>\n

“Once there was a dinner party at home with some of the most boring neighbors in the world and we were dragged down to join them for dinner,” Camilla said in 2017.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We used to complain and say, ‘Can’t we stay here and watch the television over fish fingers?’ and she’d [her mother] sit us down at the dinner table and the minute there was a silence, she used to say, ‘Talk! I don’t care what you talk about, talk about your budgie or your pony but keep the conversation going . . . ‘”<\/p>\n

“And so I’ve never been able not to talk,” she noted, adding: “It’s in the psyche, not to leave a silence.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Queen Camilla’s country upbringing\u00a0<\/p>\n

Camilla was born on 17 July 1974 to Major Bruce Shand, a British Army officer turned businessman, and Rosalind, the daughter of Roland Cubitt, 3rd Baron Ashcombe.<\/p>\n

She grew up in rural Sussex and was educated at the Queens Gate School in South Kensington, before concluding her schooling in Switzerland and France.<\/p>\n

She grew up alongside a younger brother, Mark, and a younger sister, Annabelle.<\/p>\n

How Camilla became a royal\u00a0<\/p>\n

The couple first met on the Windsor Great Park polo field in 1970, a year before the future King joined the Royal Navy. However, their paths initially diverged: Camilla married cavalry officer Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973, while Charles wed Lady Diana Spencer in 1981.<\/p>\n

Their relationship remained a subject of intense public scrutiny<\/a> over the following decades. During a 1994 interview with Jonathan Dimbleby, Charles said he was faithful until his marriage had “irretrievably broken down.” A year later, Princess Diana famously referenced Camilla in her BBC Panorama interview, stating, “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”<\/p>\n

Following their respective divorces and the tragic death of Princess Diana in 1997, Charles and Camilla eventually reunited.
