Ever the pandering pol with his eye on the next higher office, Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal demands that a \u201cbeloved\u201d IMAX cineplex be saved.<\/a><\/p>\n

He\u2019s the latest local elected to come out against NYU Langone Health\u2019s plan to acquire the massive Second Avenue site<\/a>, which also holds a Fairway supermarket.<\/p>\n

Onetime \u201cYes, in my back yard\u201d crusader Hoylman-Sigal vowed<\/a> to \u201cnot approve any prospective rezoning of the Kips Bay AMC 15 site without the inclusion of a cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nabe\u2019s future, he insists, \u201cmust include a movie theater and grocery store.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

But, apparently, no hospital. Or the new housing that YIMBYs supposedly support.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf all the public benefits you could demand and you picked \u2026 a movie theater ???\u201d tweeted one wag.<\/p>\n

Another mocked: \u201cHe rides bravely into history, not to defend the Little Bighorn, but to defend the last stand of the 7:20 PM screening.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a cynical power play: Hoylman is abusing his powers to shake down NYU Langone and the landlord and pander to NIMBY locals terrified of a little extra traffic from a world-class medical center.<\/p>\n

Or put it another way: Brad\u2019s happy to blow up hundreds of jobs and desperately needed apartments just to keep popcorn popping.<\/p>\n
