GRAVESEND, Brooklyn (WABC) — Transit buffs will have a chance to take home a piece of New York City’s transportation system during NYC Transit’s annual pop-up sale in Gravesend.<\/p>\n
The sale, held on a secure lot on Avenue U, features items collected from subway stations being rehabilitated or renovated, as well as equipment from trains, including Metro-North.<\/p>\n
Paul Dvoskin of NYC Transit heads the team that collects the material throughout the year.<\/p>\n
“Throughout the year we, one truck load at a time, we bring this material here, I would say four to six times a year. The day of the event, that’s when the magic happens,” Dvoskin said.<\/p>\n
The sale will run Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with items priced from roughly $100 to $3,000.<\/p>\n
“That’s probably what brings most of the appeal, these items, the fact that they are scarred up, beaten up,” Dvoskin said.<\/p>\n
Items for sale include station globes, a window, grab holds and actual turnstiles. New this year are MetroCards and orange triple seats from R46 subway cars.<\/p>\n
The event started in 2021. Between 3,000 and 5,000 customers come to the two-day sale, with some lining up hours before the gates open.<\/p>\n
“It could be transit buffs, it could be a couple that ended up meeting at Avenue U to come look for the sign,” Dvoskin said.<\/p>\n
One prospective shopper from Queens already had a specific piece of transit history in mind.<\/p>\n
“I live in Queens, so I want to take a 7 train Jackson Heights sign,” he said.<\/p>\n
Shoppers should also be prepared to transport whatever they purchase.<\/p>\n
“The rules are, if you buy it, you take it. Absolutely we are not storing it, come and get it,” Dvoskin said.<\/p>\n
Guests will be admitted in small groups and have 45 minutes to shop.<\/p>\n
