Martin Scorsese’s attempt to spend a little time with fans in Brooklyn came to an abrupt end.

Scorsese, 83, stepped out to greet a crowd gathered in Brooklyn on Tuesday, October 6, stopping to sign autographs for those waiting to see him. But the otherwise friendly interaction quickly became tense when a man suddenly moved toward the filmmaker while appearing to demand something from him.

Video captured at the scene shows security immediately springing into action and pinning down the unidentified man (who had a beard and was wearing a blue shirt) as the surrounding crowd reacts. It’s unclear what the man wanted from Scorsese or what his intentions were.

With the situation escalating, security quickly escorted the Goodfellas director away from the crowd, bringing the autograph signing to an early end.

The other fans weren’t exactly thrilled about that. People in the crowd could be heard getting angry with the man after realizing the incident had cost them their opportunity to meet Scorsese and potentially score an autograph. The man later apologized to the disappointed crowd.

Fans came up with a different theory in a clip circulating online.

“Plot twist, this was Marty’s way of avoiding signing anything,” one wrote in the comments.

“Staged. Scorsese paid him to do that so he could leave without signing… Marty don’t like talking to the fans,” a second claimed.

“Yoooooo that’s the same guy that interrupted @kaws last Thursday @ cooper hall,” a third noted about contemporary artist Brian Donnelly.

A fourth joked, “That man ruined 32 ebay stores that evening.”

Scorsese was in Brooklyn that evening to join Olivia Harrison, producer and widow of late Beatles guitarist George Harrison, for a live conversation at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House.

Scorsese certainly had plenty to discuss with Harrison. In addition to his decades of filmmaking, the Oscar-winning director has an extensive history of documenting music and previously directed the 2011 documentary George Harrison: Living in the Material World about the musician’s life and career.
