Since then, riders have been getting used to the new entrances, while the MTA and manufacturers have made adjustments to door timing and sensors after some early complaints.

Discover more local reporting on our homepage

The new gates feature longer doors designed to make it harder for riders to jump, crawl under, or otherwise bypass the fare system. According to the MTA, fare evasion has dropped by an average of 35 percent at entrances equipped with the new gates.

Adding more gates has always been part of the agency’s plan.

On Wednesday, Gov. Kathy Hochul and MTA Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber announced that the technology will be installed at 20 additional stations by the end of the year. The expansion will place the gates at all entrances at the selected stations across Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Bronx.

The MTA’s long-term goal is to install the gates at 150 locations over the next five years. Funding for that expansion is already in place.

“Every time someone steals a fare, they steal money that could be used for ride improvements and salaries,” Hochul said. “And who ends up footing the bill? The riders who are paying.”

Lieber said fare evasion remains a major concern for customers.

“Nothing is more frustrating than seeing people go through without paying,” he said. “That is a real frustration, and we are dealing with it.”

Make PIX11 your preferred news source on Google: Here’s how

Three vendors participated in the pilot program, paying for the installation of their own equipment. All three companies remain eligible to bid on the next phase of the project.

The MTA says each of the three gate designs produced significant reductions in fare evasion. However, because of the ongoing procurement process, the agency is not releasing the performance data for individual models.

The pilot program was not without challenges. Early on, some riders reported becoming stuck in the gates, while others said children occasionally did not make it through before the doors closed. The MTA and vendors responded by making adjustments to sensors and door timing.

Commuter Richie said he has noticed the accessibility benefits of the new gates.

“I find it works. I’m able to get in with luggage or big boxes or my scooter, and those with wheelchairs can get through as well,” he said.

MTA officials say the average 35 percent reduction in fare evasion could ultimately translate into hundreds of millions of dollars in additional revenue if the technology is expanded throughout the system.

Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
