That comes with a seasonal caveat: Play is available this October and November, and then resumes from April through September next year. (December through March remains firmly in your indoor-soccer era.)

The daily sessions run from 10pm to 2am and are free for New Yorkers ages 18 and older. One field in each borough is participating: there’s Soundview Park in the Bronx; Calvert Vaux Park in Brooklyn; Harlem River Park in Manhattan; Astoria Park in Queens; and Staten Island’s Fairview Park.

RECOMMENDED: NYC’s much-anticipated first-ever soccer stadium officially has a name

To book a field, head to the NYC Open Play website. NYC Footy will facilitate play onsite, while NYC Parks handles permits and lighting. Parks Enforcement Patrol officers will have a dedicated presence at each location, with NYPD support, according to the Parks Department.

The summer trial gave the city plenty of reason to keep the lights on. Officials reported 4,531 participants across 696 field bookings, averaging six to eight players per booking. Brooklyn’s Calvert Vaux Park was the busiest location, welcoming 1,448 players. Participation peaked between 10 pm and 2 am, helping shape the returning program’s hours.

“This summer, we proved that the people’s game will always belong to the people,” Mamdani said in a statement. “Long after the sun had set, our late-night soccer fields came alive with energy and enthusiasm as nurses, students and delivery workers passed, saved and scored.”

For anyone whose workday ends when other people are already brushing their teeth, those hours offer a welcome shot at getting outside and into a game. The schedule will also overlap with the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, so next summer’s soccer fever comes with somewhere to burn it off.

Consider it another answer to the eternal New York question: what can we do this late that doesn’t require ordering another drink?

Your next 1am New York outing could involve fewer tequila shots and considerably more shots on goal.
