But the city’s health data offers a surprisingly encouraging counterpoint: New Yorkers live roughly four years longer than the national average.

Provisional NYC Health Department figures put the city’s life expectancy at 83.2 years in 2024, its highest recorded level. Nationwide, life expectancy was 79 years that year, according to finalized CDC data—a 4.2-year gap.

The city figure also meets a target New York set for 2030. HealthyNYC, the public health campaign launched in 2023, aimed to raise life expectancy to 83 years by tackling major causes of premature death, including chronic diseases, overdose, violence and COVID-19. The city announced the milestone last November, using preliminary figures for the previous year.

RECOMMENDED: NYC was named one of the world’s 20 best cities for Gen Z—here’s how the Big Apple ranked

For some perspective, citywide life expectancy was 80.7 years in 2021. By 2024, it had climbed 2.5 years, surpassing the previous high of 82.6 recorded in both 2019 and 2023. Life expectancy is a population estimate based on death rates, rather than a guaranteed expiration date for anyone currently navigating the five boroughs.

The Health Department attributes much of the improvement to a sharp decline in COVID-19 death rates. Between 2021 and 2024, COVID deaths fell 93.1 percent; homicide and overdose deaths also declined. Those gains don’t establish that living here automatically makes you healthier, but they do show a substantial recovery from the pandemic’s toll.

The citywide average, however, conceals big differences. Finalized 2023 figures show a life expectancy of 78.3 years for Black New Yorkers, compared with 83.3 for white New Yorkers, 82.8 for Latino New Yorkers, and 86.9 for Asian and Pacific Islander New Yorkers. The gap between Black and white residents remained wider than before the pandemic.

“Although we have met this goal, our work is not done,” then-acting Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Morse said when the milestone was announced.

HealthyNYC’s work continues beyond that headline number, with goals covering cancer, suicide, maternal mortality and other threats to health. Longer lives are worth celebrating. Making those extra years available across the city remains the bigger assignment.

Between rent, subway delays and the occasional rat encounter, New York doesn’t always feel like a place that adds…

[6
1739,9,11,10,2480,904
post-368179","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york","tag-categories-things-to-do","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-headlines","tag-new-york-news","tag-news-city-life","tag-things-to-do
["GET
