NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) \u2013 There’s only one way for SpaceX to resolve a subpoena from the New York City Council: testify.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On Monday, city leaders grilled AI company representatives and industry whistleblowers<\/a> over the risk the technology poses to humanity. Under threat of subpoena, representatives of Meta, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google offered little insight into how the companies are maintaining safeguards.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0Discover more local reporting on our homepage\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI<\/a> was a no-show. On Thursday, Council Speaker Julie Menin<\/a> said the city is still pursuing its subpoena to compel the company to speak publicly.<\/p>\n “We spoke to them today. We made very clear that the only way to answer that subpoena is to testify in front of the council. Otherwise, we will end up in court,” Menin said.<\/p>\n Monday’s hearing ran for nearly 10 hours, opened by former researchers from Google, Anthropic and OpenAI who said the very future of humanity is at stake. Then, representatives of the companies were asked how they quantify and protect against these existential risks.\u00a0<\/p>\n Menin referenced a moment early in the hearing when she asked the companies to “quantify the risk imposed by AI in the worst, catastrophic scenario.” In response, OpenAI’s Morgan Dwyer said, “I don’t know,” and that “the percentage chance doesn’t matter.”<\/p>\n “What we heard from the AI companies was not reassuring at all,” Menin said. “If you can’t quantify what the risk is, how can you assure New Yorkers that the models you’re going to release are safe?”<\/p>\n Emily Rahhal is a digital reporter who has covered New York City since 2023 after reporting in Los Angeles for years.
