(CNN) \u2014 A man was shot during an encounter with federal immigration agents in the Bronx on Thursday afternoon, according to the New York Police Department.<\/p>\n
Just after 4 p.m., agents with ICE\u2019s Enforcement and Removal Operations \u2014 a branch of ICE focused on arresting undocumented immigrants \u2014 encountered a person they were targeting, and they fired shots, according to preliminary information from a law enforcement source.<\/p>\n
The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment and was conscious, police said. His injuries were not considered life-threatening, and police transported him to the hospital in a police car and did not wait for an ambulance, according to the law enforcement source.<\/p>\n
The man who was shot by ICE agents is 28 years old and has a criminal history in New York City, according to a law enforcement source.<\/p>\n
His criminal record includes a 2023 arrest for robbery, to which he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of grand larceny and was placed on probation for five years. He has a pending indictment for the sale of a controlled substance, the source added.<\/p>\n
Two agents were also injured in the encounter, according to the source, and they also are being treated at a local hospital. One of the agents may have been injured in a car accident, though it\u2019s unclear if the accident was part of the attempted arrest or response, according to a federal official.<\/p>\n
CNN has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment.<\/p>\n
At the time of the shooting, witnesses reported to police they saw a man dressed in a bright yellow construction vest holding a gun. Witnesses also told officers they heard five to six gunshots and people screaming, according to police officials.<\/p>\n
Video purportedly from the scene shows a man matching that description holding a semi-automatic rifle and wearing an ICE badge around his neck.<\/p>\n
NYPD were not involved<\/a> in the incident in the Marble Hill neighborhood just north of Manhattan, the department said in a statement. After the shooting, NYPD officials called for a mobilization to deal with crowd control and evidence at the scene.<\/p>\n Hours after the shooting, agents with Homeland Security Investigations and police officers could be seen walking behind yellow police tape as a group of protesters started gathering at the scene.<\/p>\n HSI responded to the scene to take over the investigation of the shooting, according to a federal source, similar to the law enforcement response to the September 20 ICE shooting in Austin, Texas, which left a man from Venezuela wounded<\/a>.<\/p>\n New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement he has \u201ccalled the President\u201d and \u201cwill demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city.\u201d<\/p>\n Mamdani and President Donald Trump had not yet spoken as of Thursday evening, according to a spokesperson for the mayor.<\/p>\n \u201cOur thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cGet ICE out of our neighborhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she\u2019s been briefed on the incident.<\/p>\n
