Times Square<\/a> already has plenty of reasons to look up. Next week, an artist dangling 150 feet above the pavement will make a fairly compelling case for taking your eyes off the billboards.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, October 13, at 8 pm, New York\u2013based performance artist and composer Kinlaw<\/a> will bring FALL RISK to Duffy Square, between 46th and 47th Streets. Presented by Times Square Arts, the one-night-only performance will use a crane to suspend the artist high above one of the city\u2019s busiest public spaces.<\/p>\n

The work is inspired by\u00a0Kinlaw\u2019s own experience caring for their aging and disabled parents, including navigating the insurance and financial systems that determine access to care. It asks what happens when survival becomes a public monument\u2014and puts the artist\u2019s own body under pressure in the process.<\/p>\n

During the performance, a 150-foot crane arm will lift and drop Kinlaw above the street. A microphone will amplify their breathing as they speak under the physical strain of the action, bringing an intimate human sound into the busy neighborhood.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not interested in representing these conditions; I\u2019m putting them under pressure in real time,\u201d Kinlaw said in the announcement.<\/p>\n

FALL RISK was originally commissioned by Art Omi curator Sara O\u2019Keeffe and first performed in June 2025 with boom truck operator Mark Moeske and creative direction by Kathleen Dycaico. This will be its New York City premiere and only its second presentation.<\/p>\n

Kinlaw has some experience taking their work into physically demanding territory. Previous performances have involved being strapped to a pickup truck speeding through the Los Angeles River and scaling car lifts in a New York City parking lot.<\/p>\n

Still, this staging brings the work to an unusually public setting, with passing crowds becoming potential witnesses to a performance about the effort of getting through life.<\/p>\n
