A man from the Dominican Republic was shot by federal immigration agents during a targeted enforcement operation in the Bronx on Thursday, according to the Department of Homeland Security, marking the first shooting involving ICE agents in New York City since President Donald Trump\u2019s immigration crackdown.<\/p>\n

Federal authorities have not explained what led up to the shooting of the 28-year-old, whose name has not yet been released. DHS said the man has ties to the Trinitarios gang and prior criminal convictions and arrests.<\/p>\n

Just after 4 p.m., agents with ICE\u2019s Enforcement and Removal Operations \u2014 a branch of ICE focused on arresting undocumented immigrants \u2014 encountered the man when a federal agent discharged a weapon into his vehicle, a law enforcement source told CNN.<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s injuries, a graze wound to the neck, were not considered life-threatening, and police transported him to the hospital in a police car and did not wait for an ambulance, according to the law enforcement source.<\/p>\n

A 5-year-old was sitting in the back of the car when the shooting occurred and was not injured, the source told CNN. The Associated Press also reports that Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul said they had received reports the agents fired at the man while he was inside a vehicle with a 5-year-old child, who was apparently unhurt.<\/p>\n

DHS said agents immediately provided aid after the man was shot but did not explain what led to the shooting during the operation.<\/p>\n

The man has a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny and prior arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons possession, according to DHS.<\/p>\n

Two agents were also injured in the encounter, according to a law enforcement source, and they also are being treated at a local hospital. One of the agents may have been injured in a car accident, though it\u2019s unclear if the accident was part of the attempted arrest or response, according to a federal official.<\/p>\n

CNN asked DHS whether the officers involved were wearing body cameras. The agency referred CNN back to its original statement, which made no mention of body cameras. <\/p>\n

At the time of the shooting, witnesses reported to police they saw a man dressed in a bright yellow construction vest holding a gun. Witnesses also told officers they heard five to six gunshots and people screaming, according to police officials. <\/p>\n

NYPD were not involved<\/a> in the incident in the Marble Hill neighborhood just north of Manhattan, the department said in a statement. After the shooting, NYPD officials called for a mobilization to deal with crowd control and evidence at the scene.<\/p>\n

Hours after the shooting, agents with Homeland Security Investigations and police officers could be seen walking behind yellow police tape as a group of protesters started gathering at the scene.<\/p>\n

HSI responded to the scene to take over the investigation of the shooting, according to a federal source, similar to the law enforcement response to the Sept. 20 ICE shooting in Austin, Texas, which left a man from Venezuela wounded.<\/p>\n

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement he has \u201ccalled the President\u201d and \u201cwill demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani and Trump had not yet spoken as of Thursday evening, according to a spokesperson for the mayor.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cGet ICE out of our neighborhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she\u2019s been briefed on the incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident,\u201d she said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cNew Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.\u201d<\/p>\n

Local leaders and city council members called on DHS to release all available body camera footage and for the state attorney general\u2019s office to launch an independent investigation into the shooting during a Thursday night news conference.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want justice for this family, we want it for this neighborhood,\u201d New York Rep. Adriano Espaillat said at the news conference. \u201cAnd as I said before, I say today, we need to get rid of ICE.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether you\u2019re in the Bronx or Manhattan, whether you\u2019re documented or not, whether the color of your skin or your religion, you are a New Yorker first, \u2026 and New Yorkers stand up for New Yorkers,\u201d Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal said. <\/p>\n
