Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he tried to negotiate with President Trump to release the \u201ccriminal illegal alien\u201d and alleged gang member who was shot by ICE Thursday in the Bronx<\/a> as he called for the abolishment of the federal agency.<\/p>\n

\u201cAround 4 p.m. this afternoon, a New Yorker was shot by ICE agents in Marble Hill,\u201d a furious Mamdani told reporters at the late-night press conference near the scene of a rowdy anti-ICE protest in the borough<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the past two hours, I\u2019ve been on the phone with President Trump and [DHS] Secretary Mullin negotiating the release of the man ICE agents shot. Those negotiations were unsuccessful,\u201d Hizzoner said.<\/p>\n

The migrant, identified by the NYPD as Oscar Belgal, 28, was shot in the neck and hospitalized before he was taken from NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital by unmarked ICE vehicles, according to the mayor.<\/p>\n

Mamdani \u2014 who spoke over protesters\u2019 chants labeling him \u201ccomplicit\u201d \u2014 called Immigration and Customs Enforcement \u201crotten to its core\u201d and is an \u201cagency that must be abolished\u201d in the fiery speech.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does Trump have to say about all of this?\u201d he demanded.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow I made clear to the president, to the secretary, our request [is] that ICE agents leave the scene entirely \u2014 as well as the demand that ICE stop its enforcement actions in New York City.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Department of Homeland Security said ICE had been attempting to arrest Belgal, of the Dominican Republic, who they claimed has ties to the Trinitarios gang when the shooting occurred.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know, and I have said this directly, whether to the president or to the public, ICE undermines public safety. It makes us less safe,\u201d the mayor said.<\/p>\n

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that seven rounds were fired by at least one ICE agent and made it clear that the \u201cNYPD had no involvement in the federal operation prior to the shooting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tisch said NYPD Argus cameras captured Belgal in the driver\u2019s seat of a gray Honda CRV that was backing into a parking spot when a plain-clothes federal officer approached the driver\u2019s side window with his gun drawn.<\/p>\n

Another plain-clothes agent approached the driver\u2019s side headlight when the vehicle began to move forward, out of the camera\u2019s view, the commissioner added.<\/p>\n

NYPD cameras didn\u2019t capture the shooting, but Tisch said Belgal was struck in the neck, below his left ear.<\/p>\n

A 5-year-old child, believed by police to be Belgal\u2019s son, was inside the Honda CRV at the time of the shooting and was unharmed, Tisch said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no explanation for federal officers firing this many rounds into a car that has a 5-year-old in the car,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n

NYPD officers responding to a nearby call rushed to the scene for several reports of a shooting, the police commissioner said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen [officers] arrived, they encountered several men in various forms of attire, including some in construction-style vests, face masks, and at least one carrying a long gun,\u201d Tisch said, adding, \u201cofficers also encountered the injured individual handcuffed and seated on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

Belgal was placed into an NYPD vehicle and was administered aid by officers before he was transported to NewYork Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where he arrived in stable condition, according to Tisch.<\/p>\n

However, moments before the press conference kicked off around 11:20 p.m., \u201cICE put the man in an unmarked vehicle and whisked him away,\u201d Hizzoner said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me say this plainly, what happened today was an outrage,\u201d Mamdani fumed.<\/p>\n
