The illegal migrant shot by ICE agents in a chaotic Bronx showdown<\/a> terrorized his former neighbors with a machete\u2014and terrified residents said Saturday\u00a0they are universally relieved the violent gangbanger has finally been taken off the streets.<\/p>\n

Oscar Belgal, 28, who federal authorities said is a \u201ccriminal illegal alien\u201d<\/a> from the Dominican Republic with alleged ties to the violent Trinitarios street gang, wreaked havoc in the halls of the Washington Heights apartment building where he lived until about a year ago, according to locals.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a menace to society,\u201d one shaken resident said of Belgal \u2014 who Mayor Zohran Mamdani outrageously called a \u201cNew Yorker,\u201d<\/a> whose release he tried to negotiate as he railed against US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spoke to him once and told him, \u2018Look, you need to be more submissive because I see you acting too reckless\u2019 \u2026 He thought he was a tough guy,\u201d the resident told The Post.<\/p>\n

Oscar Belgal had a dramatic showdown with ICE agents Thursday. DHS<\/p>\n

The former neighbor, a man from the Dominican Republic who withheld his name, recalled one of Belgal\u2019s most unhinged outbursts <\/a>while living there \u2014 in which he pulled a machete on another resident\u2019s nephew. <\/p>\n

He claimed Belgal got into a fight with the man outside the building last year, prompting him to whip out the deadly weapon. <\/p>\n

The neighbor also claimed Belgal, who he described as arrogant and smug, previously dodged ICE by running down one of the building\u2019s two fire escapes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were looking for him. It seems he had a pending case; Immigration goes after people who have committed crimes,\u201d he said. \u201cImmigration is just doing its job. They go after those who have committed crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the latest on the Bronx ICE shooting:<\/p>\n

Belgal\u2019s rap sheet includes a 2023 armed robbery conviction and a 2025 arrest for allegedly selling lethal drugs like fentanyl, cocaine and heroin in a case that remains open. His most recent run-in with the law was Thursday when two plainclothes ICE agents, with guns drawn, approached the front left side of the gray Honda CR-V he was driving as he peeled out of a parking spot on 225th Street in The Bronx.<\/p>\n

One punched and smashed the glass of the driver\u2019s side window. Marcos Charles, the head of ICE\u2019s Enforcement and Removal Operations division, said\u00a0Belgal \u201caccelerated\u201d at the agents<\/a>, \u201csmashing\u201d into two of them, which was not captured on the CCTV footage obtained by The Post Friday.<\/p>\n

He was pulling out of a parking spot when he was approached by agents. New York City Police Department<\/p>\n

Agents caught up with Belgal about half a block away on\u00a0Marble Hill Ave\u00a0outside the\u00a0C&G Gourmet Deli before bullets rang and he was shot in the neck, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. <\/p>\n

His 5-year-old son, who was in the backseat of the vehicle, was unharmed. Belgal is expected to recover.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, protests erupted in Midtown in support of the alleged gangbanger, with anti-ICE rioters holding signs demanding \u201cjustice for Oscar Belgal\u201d and to \u201cabolish ICE.\u201d Other posters called for Tisch to be fired.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s putting his son at risk. He\u2019s got legal trouble, yet he drives around with his son in the car?\u201d Belgal\u2019s outraged former neighbor asked. \u201cNo, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s right. If he owes a debt to society, he should pay it\u2026He was a danger to society.\u201d<\/p>\n

After being taken into custody, Belgal was transported to New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital in stable condition.
