PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (AP) \u2014 Isaias<\/a> roared onto the Florida Panhandle<\/a>, ripping roofs off homes and condominiums, before moving north Saturday with torrential rain and the threat of flash floods and tornadoes across the Southeast. <\/p>\n

At least four deaths were linked to the storm, including two people killed when trees fell onto homes in Florida and Alabama. Nearly 700,000 customers were without power by midday, and forecasters warned that flooding could stretch into the southern Appalachians.<\/p>\n

Isaias came ashore Friday near Destin, Florida, as a Category 2 hurricane. The storm weakened overnight and was downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, but it remained a threat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe risk of flooding is still high,\u201d Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Saturday morning. <\/a>\u201cSometimes these things happen a day or two days after the storm goes through. So the flooding story is not over.\u201d <\/p>\n

In Escambia County, Florida, Sheriff Chip Simmons said on Facebook that a woman died when a tree fell on her home. Hurricane-force winds blew the roof off a hotel in Pensacola, and Mayor D.C. Reeves said the airport \u201ctook some damage.\u201d The storm flattened a boathouse in Destin and flooded streets. <\/p>\n

In Birmingham, Alabama, a person died when a tree fell on a house, Fire Chief Cory Moon said. Another person was rescued and treated at the scene. In Mobile, authorities reported downed trees and power lines and numerous closed roads.<\/p>\n

Forecasters said the storm could still bring 4 to 8 inches of rain across southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend over the weekend. It was expected to move into the Tennessee Valley and then the mid-Atlantic on Sunday. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere are still high wind warnings for portions of the Southeast,\u201d Robbie Berg, a warning coordination meteorologist with the National Hurricane Center in Miami, said. \u201cSo even though it has become post-tropical, it still does remain a wind threat, as well as a heavy rainfall threat. We could see some areas of significant flash flooding over the next couple of days.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Atlantic hurricane season has been unusually quiet this year<\/a>, and Isaias was the first hurricane to hit the eastern U.S. since 2024.<\/p>\n

The remnants of Isaias are expected to reach the New York City area Sunday. The National Weather Service\u2019s latest forecast discussion, issued at 7:31 a.m. Saturday, calls for rain mainly Sunday afternoon and night, with 1 to 2 inches possible and locally higher amounts. Bands of heavy rain and a few thunderstorms are possible, and the main threat is minor flooding in urban areas and spots with poor drainage. <\/p>\n

The weather service\u2019s Weather Prediction Center has a marginal risk of excessive rainfall, meaning isolated flash flooding is possible. <\/p>\n

Gusts around 35 mph are expected, especially along the coast. Minor coastal flooding is possible around New York Harbor during the early Monday high tide, with a lesser risk early Tuesday. <\/p>\n

For New York City, the weather service forecasts highs in the mid-60s Sunday, with rain likely in the afternoon and gusts up to 30 mph. Rain continues Sunday night with a slight chance of thunderstorms. A chance of showers could linger Monday morning, Columbus Day, before turning mostly sunny, with highs in the lower 70s. <\/p>\n

Another cold front could bring showers late Tuesday into Wednesday. <\/p>\n
