The founder of a Bronx wellness clinic previously arrested in connection with the death of a 27-year-old woman during a botched unlicensed medical procedure<\/a> was ordered held on $2 million bail after he was slapped with a much more serious charge \u2014 depraved indifference murder, authorities said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t immediately clear if Luis Rojas Cabrera, 55 \u2014 who was released without bail after his initial arrest in July for reckless endangerment and operating an illegal medical practice during an anti-aging procedure for Elizabeth Baron \u2014 will make bail on the new charges. He is being held on Rikers Island after being arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Supreme Court Tuesday on the new charges.<\/p>\n

His lawyer Donald Vogelman called the murder charge \u201coutrageous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDepraved indifference murder means that the defendant did not care whether the patient lived or died,\u201d Vogelman told the Daily News. \u201cThat fact that Mr. Cabrera called 911 himself and gave (Baron) CPR proves that he did care.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new criminal charges come after Baron\u2019s death was ruled a homicide<\/a>, officials said.<\/p>\n

Baron died as a result of a cardiac air embolism caused by the procedure on July 19 at Bereshit Lifestyle Center on Riverdale Ave. near W. 232nd St., the city Medical Examiner determined.<\/p>\n

Baron went into medical distress soon after Cabrera, the clinic\u2019s founder, injected her right hand with nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+, which is marketed as an \u201canti-aging therapy solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cabrera called an ambulance and Baron was rushed to New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital but medics were unable to revive her.<\/p>\n

Cabrera was licensed in his native Dominican Republic but not in the U.S.<\/p>\n

At his initial arraignment, a prosecutor said Cabrera told police he had made \u201ca very big mistake.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Bronx clinic\u2019s website, which remained online more than a month after Baron received the fatal procedure, describes Cabrera as \u201can active surgeon and Naturopath in the Dominican Republic and an alternative and holistic medicine (practitioner) in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

The unlicensed wellness clinic founder was arrested twice in November at Newark Liberty International Airport arriving back from the Dominican Republic, first for possession of a metal baton, and four days later for almost 200 vials of prescription medications, 30 tablets, and 10 syringes of lidocaine, an anesthetic.<\/p>\n
