Downs for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>But Italian-American civic leaders said the mayor\u2019s no-show <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/10\/10\/us-news\/mamdani-snubs-brooklyn-columbus-day-parade-ghosts-queens-organizers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is the latest example of Hizzoner downplaying<\/a> the community\u2019s contributions to the Big Apple and US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s disrespectful to the Italian-American community and not coming to the Columbus Day parade confirms it,\u201d said Angelo Vivolo, chairman of the Columbus Heritage Coalition representing more than 50-Italian-American organizations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know he hates Columbus. But the parade celebrates the rich culture and heritage of Italian-Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani also riled up local Italian-Americans when he released an ethnic enclave map that listed little-known communities in the five boroughs but <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/08\/us-news\/mayor-mamdanis-map-of-nyc-immigrant-neighborhoods-sparks-outrage-for-ignoring-little-italy-terrible-mistake\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">omitted Little Italy and Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"   data-modal-image=\"41285971\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/GettyImages-1726266661.jpg\" alt=\"People watch the annual 79th Annual Columbus Day Parade on Fifth Avenue on October 09, 2023 in New York City. \" class=\"wp-image-41285971\"\/>People watch the annual 79th Annual Columbus Day Parade on Fifth Avenue on October 09, 2023 in New York City.  Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani did issue a nearly three-minute video statement <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/10\/11\/us-news\/trump-claims-days-of-plunder-are-over-in-spicy-columbus-day-post-bashing-dems-for-statue-hysteria\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">celebrating Italian Heritage Month.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He paid tribute to Italian immigrants who helped build the city and honored East Harlem Rep. Vito Marcantonio, who fought for Social Security, unemployment benefits and civil rights.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani, a staunch critic of Israel who has accused the Jewish state of genocide, also boycotted the Israel Day parade in May.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"There\u2019s no amore lost between Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the local Italian-American community.
