Households can check their remaining Summer EBT balances through the ebtEDGE website or mobile app, or by calling (888) 328-6399.

New York mulls Federal Scholarship Tax Credit program

“Every dollar of Summer EBT matters, especially at a time when families across New York are struggling with the rising cost of groceries and other essentials,” said Rachel Sabella, Director of No Kid Hungry New York, in a press statement on Friday.

While benefits are expiring, No Kid Hungry New York projected in September that the 2026 Summer EBT program will have delivered about $240 million to almost two million kids in New York this year. Any applications for the program received after the application window closed on September 8 will be automatically reviewed for 2027 instead.

Will New York’s Grid of the Future have fairer rates and virtual power plants?

Though the money appears on debit cards, recipients of EBT and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are still vulnerable to theft, according to the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. An OTDA fraud alert warns about hidden skimming devices on card readers at stores or deceptive text messages that fish for access.

You can “lock” a card between trips to the grocery store on ebtEDGE to prevent being scammed. But OTDA pointed out that the federal government stopped repaying stolen SNAP funds in late 2024, so victims can’t get back what’s been stolen from their SNAP or Summer EBT account.

New York expands free SUNY and CUNY tuition to those with college degrees

No Kid Hungry polling released in March showed that 74% of families in New York currently have to choose between food or housing and transportation.

Beyond the expiring summer funds, Hunger Solutions New York reported that a state policy reset is letting 270,000 New Yorkers who lost SNAP reapply for benefits. The advocacy organization explained that the second chance comes from New York restarting its three-year timer for federal SNAP work requirements on October 1.

Troy passes first New York law to restrict automated license plate reader data

Summer EBT and SNAP are distinct federal nutrition programs, though a child’s enrollment in SNAP automatically qualifies them for Summer EBT.

Federal regulations stemming from 2025’s One Big Beautiful Bill limit Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents—meaning they’re 18 to 64, have no disabilities, and don’t live with a child under 14—to three months of SNAP payments every three years. They can get around that limit with at least 80 hours a month of paid or unpaid work or by joining certain job-training programs. Or they can qualify for an exemption by being pregnant or medically unfit for employment.

But thousands of New Yorkers couldn’t get around the three-month limit and had met their quota by the end of September. But underemployed beneficiaries in New York can still reapply for three more months of aid because the state tracks the timing using a federal option called the fixed statewide clock.

Hochul, James talk Cornell University rape investigation

That means the three-year penalty period has the same start and end date statewide, regardless of when an individual New Yorker lost or started receiving SNAP benefits. As told by Hunger Solutions New York, OBBBA reduced federal spending by passing costs onto states and counties while cutting about $187 billion from SNAP over the next decade through 2036.

Hunger Solutions New York wants New York’s congressional delegation to delay OBBBA’s changes to SNAP. The advocacy group warned that it adds more than $1.2 billion to New York’s annual expenses, which could limit county investments in local food security programs administered at the state and county levels.

ALBANY, N.Y.
