\n\tBeta Film<\/a>\u2019s \u201cQueen Silvia<\/a>\u201d is world-premiering at Mipcom<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tInspired by the real-life romance between Sweden\u2019s Crown Prince Carl Gustaf and Silvia Sommerlath, a German-Brazilian interpreter who became Queen of Sweden, it\u2019s directed by Miguel Alexandre and stars Alicia von Rittberg and Edvin Endre.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cEven though it\u2019s a very European story, people will see that it\u2019s universal and can be sold \u2013 and watched \u2013 from Tokyo to Buenos Aires,\u201d says executive producer Justus Riesenkampff.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe series is a joint production of Pyjama Pictures (Germany) and Unlimited Stories (Sweden) for Prime Video in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland and the Nordic countries, as well as for SAT.1 in Germany.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn Germany, we\u2019re also fascinated by royalty. We discovered that we actually have a queen: Silvia Sommerlath, who\u2019s partly German and partly Brazilian,\u201d Alexandre tells Variety.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThese two people had something the other one was missing. Sommerlath was brought up between two different cultures and was looking for home. Carl Gustaf had that, but you could also call it a prison. In Silvia, he found someone who loved him for who he really was, and that gave him the strength to fulfill his role.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cCarl Gustaf has said publicly that he needed to find a queen for Sweden. It was difficult for him to date because he needed someone who could \u2018do the job.\u2019 Silvia was far better at it than he ever was,\u201d says Edvin Endre.<\/p>\n

\n\tStill, it\u2019s important to note that she was a fully formed human being even before setting foot in the royal court.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cShe wasn\u2019t looking for someone to make her \u2018whole\u2019. She was already very independent. But how do you fit into a world where you have to give up the things you\u2019ve built for yourself?,\u201d wonders Alicia von Rittberg.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe couple met in 1972. They got engaged four years later.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFor royals, that\u2019s a long time. We asked: \u2018What happened within those four years?\u2019 That\u2019s where we found the heart of our tale. It\u2019s not about a woman who wants to become a queen; it\u2019s about a woman who has to come to terms with it. It\u2019s not a Cinderella story,\u201d adds showrunner Carsten Kelber.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn one interview, Sylvia said: \u2018I\u2019m glad I was given so much time to decide.\u2019 She said this while sitting right next to him, which means he probably asked earlier. This breaks the usual narrative because it\u2019s not about \u2018When is he going to ask\u2019?!.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThey wanted to show someone who isn\u2019t overwhelmed by her new surroundings. Instead, she\u2019s trying to find her place within them.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t think she was even that impressed,\u201d laughs von Rittberg, with her co-star adding: \u201cWhen we talk about royal families, we tend to focus on privilege. But Sylvia was one of the few people in his life who could see him as a real person.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe continues: \u201cHe became king at 27, and spent his entire life resenting many of the things he had to do. Their kids were allowed to marry for love and I think that says a lot about how they chose to change things within the monarchy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite the growing criticism and never-ending wave of scandals plaguing royal families pretty much everywhere, people want to keep watching them, says the team.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI lived in Britain with my parents and since then, I\u2019ve been obsessed with royalty. Even if you\u2019re against it, you have an opinion about it. I don\u2019t think they will ever go away,\u201d notes Kelber.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile future seasons will delve deeper into the themes of duty and responsibility, the first one is really all about love, says von Rittberg. And all filmmakers want to tell a good love story, adds Alexandre.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHow do you find a good one? Only when there are limitations, conflicts or reasons why two people can\u2019t be together. In modern societies, there aren\u2019t really that many obstacles anymore. That\u2019s why it\u2019s so fascinating.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tStill, Kelber prefers to call \u201cQueen Silvia\u201d a \u201cromantic drama\u201d instead. \u201cI prefer that term because we go really deep. It\u2019s O.K. to call it a \u2018love story,\u2019 but that sounds a bit too light to me.
