Brooklyn nonprofits can now apply for $4,000 in matching funds to develop health and education programs under a new grant announced by Borough President Antonio Reynoso.<\/p>\n

The new \u201cHealthy Eating Grant\u201d follows a policy recommendation from the borough president\u2019s 2025 Youth Advisory Council (YAC), a group of 20 juniors and seniors from New York City public schools who work together to identify issues in Brooklyn and develop policy-based solutions.<\/p>\n

The grant gives eligible organizations an opportunity to develop and support boroughwide health and nutrition education programs, equipping young Brooklynites and their families with the knowledge and resources to make informed, healthy food choices.<\/p>\n

Programs may include workshops, classes, events, culinary education and other community-based initiatives focused on health, nutrition, food equity and food sovereignty. Priority will be given to programs serving Brooklyn neighborhoods with high rates of food insecurity, including Brownsville, East Flatbush, East New York, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Canarsie, Crown Heights, Flatbush\/Midwood, Coney Island and Sunset Park.<\/p>\n

Access to nutrient-dense foods promotes better health outcomes and can help manage certain chronic conditions affected by nutrition. Yet many Brooklynites lack access to food literacy and nutrition education that can help them understand the relationship between their diets and overall health. The \u201cHealthy Eating Grant\u201d aims to close this gap and connect education to health outcomes through workshops, community engagement and advocacy.<\/p>\n

For the borough president, building a healthier Brooklyn means ensuring every family is empowered to make the best decisions for their health when shopping for their next meal, regardless of their neighborhood or income.<\/p>\n

\u201cCombatting food insecurity is about more than just putting food on the dinner table \u2014 it\u2019s about equity, education, and giving communities the tools they need to thrive and support their families,\u201d Reynoso said.<\/p>\n

He also praised the Youth Advisory Council, which is led in partnership with Brooklyn North and Brooklyn South high school superintendents and the Sadie Nash Leadership Project. Students learn to organize around causes that matter to them, better understand the institutions that govern their lives and put that knowledge into practice through grassroots work in their communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe young people from my Youth Advisory Council understand that well, and I\u2019m incredibly proud of them for taking on this issue and helping identify ways we can address food insecurity in their communities,\u201d Reynoso said. \u201cI encourage all organizations doing this work every day to apply so that more Brooklynites can build healthier habits for themselves and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n

Applications are open through Dec. 7, 2026.
