NEW YORK CITY (WPIX) – The New York City manhole mystery continues after three people were seen entering a sewer system in Hamilton Heights early Sunday, according to police.

Witnesses reported seeing the individuals enter the sewer system on West 141st Street between Amsterdam and Broadway around 12:52 a.m., police said.

When officers arrived, the individuals were no longer at the scene. No arrests have been made.

“Usually I used to hear stuff like this happen further way downtown Manhattan, and this is the upper part of Manhattan. Usually we don’t hear stories like that,” said David Ford, a Hamilton Heights neighbor.

The incident comes two days after five people were seen climbing out of a manhole near 525 East 82nd Street on the Upper East Side early Friday morning. The group drove away in a vehicle, according to police.

It is the latest report of people entering or emerging from manholes across the five boroughs since at least May.

Police said Friday’s incident remains under investigation and they are unsure whether it is connected to previous reports of people entering the sewer system. Sunday’s incident also remains under investigation.

Greg Sanfilippo, vice president of intelligence at Doyle Security Services and a retired NYPD counterterrorism sergeant, said some people may be entering the sewer system in search of valuables.

[35
75,84,83,9,24,63
post-371502","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-manhattan","tag-manhattan","tag-manhattan-headlines","tag-manhattan-news","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc
["GET
