I spent Tuesday evening at the Bronx Documentary Center<\/a> listening to four extraordinary photographers \u2014 David \u201cDee\u201d Delgado, Madison Swart, Carol Guzy and Victor J Blue \u2014 talk about their months documenting ICE detainments at 26 Federal Plaza<\/a>. The discussion opened with Carol speaking beneath a projected image of a masked ICE officer \u2014 a striking backdrop for her reminder that \u201ca photograph can be a powerful witness and an eloquent voice,\u201d and that professional photojournalists \u201ccheck bias at the door and let the photos speak.\u201d<\/p>\n

Victor brought a brief moment of levity, joking that he was glad Carol brought her four Pulitzers along, one for each panelist. But he quickly grounded the room, calling the courthouse coverage a rare moment in history when society can watch a country\u2019s \u201cdisappearance machine crank up in real time,\u201d and emphasizing that the photographers\u2019 only mandate is to document \u201cwithout fear or favor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dee spoke with raw honesty about \u201cpictures I wish I never had to take,\u201d and about photographing people \u201cwho couldn\u2019t speak for themselves.\u201d Madison\u2019s voice broke as she described families discovering detainments through her photos, and the painful shock of people who walk into court unaware that ICE is waiting for them in the hallway.<\/p>\n

I left proud that these photographers \u2014 compassionate, exhausted and fiercely committed \u2014 are bearing witness to a chapter of our history that would otherwise unfold in darkness.<\/p>\n
