Mipcom<\/a>, hiring German-US singer Caro Kelley to perform a live version of \u201cDancing Queen\u201d both at the company\u2019s Beta Brunch sales event, at at the series\u2019 world premiere gala. <\/p>\n\n\tSwedish actor Edvin Endre (Vikings, Fortitude, Eddie the Eagle), who plays Carl Gustaf in the series, says Queen Silvia\u2018s \u201cmore realistic, more grounded\u201d take on the monarchy, could be a revelation for Swedes as well, who often view their King Gustaf in a less-than-favorable light. <\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWhen [the King] is portrayed, it\u2019s usually as the butt of the joke,\u201d says Endre. \u201cHe\u2019s presented as being silly, goofy, not all that smart. I don\u2019t think that\u2019s the truth at all. I think he takes his job very seriously. So for this role, I wanted to go in the opposite direction.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tEndre points to the king\u2019s dyslexia as the root of the teasing. \u201cWhenever he would give speeches from a very young age, he would stumble and he would struggle, and this is kind of the reason why people don\u2019t take him seriously,\u201d he says. \u201cPeople were so brutal to him in the press.\u201d The show\u2019s approach, he says, is \u201ca lot of sympathy and\u2026 making him as human as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tEndre describes the story of the two 20-somethings as being as much \u201ca coming-of-age story\u201d as a royal romance. \u201cAt the end of the day, they\u2019re two young people sitting alone in a palace, trying to figure out each other and like if they can go on this journey together\u2026being scared and being in love and all that stuff.\u201d Adds Von Rittberg: \u201cand both of them are trying to break free from the expectations of their parents.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tMaking a drama about a living king and queen is a risky business, as the show\u2019s producers are well aware. Alexandre says Unlimited kept the Swedish court informed at every stage in the production, but that the royal family did not ask to participate. When asked about the show, the king said publicly that making a series about them while they are still alive was \u201ca horrible idea.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tBut Endre is quick to allay fears that Queen Silvia is a hatchet job. \u201cEveryone involved in this has really approached this project with a lot of like integrity and love and respect,\u201d he says. He calls the real couple \u201cthe most progressive royals in the world,\u201d who \u201creally changed the monarchy in Sweden, made it more relevant and more approachable.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe royal family, however, will not be in attendance for Queen Silvia\u2018s Mipcom premiere. The producers say the court was informed of the screening and replied with a curt \u201cthanks and good luck.\u201d A screener was also offered.
