Angie Nixon, the Democratic<\/a> candidate in Florida\u2019s<\/a> U.S. Senate Race, won\u2019t apologize for sharing the dance floor with drag queens<\/a> at a recent fundraiser.<\/p>\n

Videos of a recent Nixon campaign event focused on Florida\u2019s LGBTQ+<\/a> community began to circulate on far-right social media pages last week. On Monday, Nixon shot back at her critics, who portrayed appearing beside drag queens and other visibly queer constituents as a grave offense. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf you hate LGBTQIA+ people, just say so,\u201d Nixon wrote in a Monday post<\/a> on the social media platform X.<\/p>\n

The October 7 campaign event gained attention online after Laura Loomer, a far-right influencer and conspiracy theorist, posted a video of the event on X two days later. Loomer alleged the video showed Nixon \u201ctwerking with drag queens and transgenders,\u201d and used anti-Black terms and an anti-trans slur in the post.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwerking with drag queens is not only ghetto, but it\u2019s also beneath anyone running to be a U.S. senator,\u201d Loomer wrote.<\/p>\n

Loomer, already a controversial figure<\/a> online, came under fire recently<\/a> for making racist comments about Nixon and other Black politicians, referring to them with anti-Black terms and sexist expletives. Black political leaders and many on the left widely condemned her comments.<\/p>\n

The video that Loomer shared shows Florida drag queen Darcel Stevens twerking during the event. Moments later, it shows Stevens sidestepping with Nixon on the dance floor.<\/p>\n

Nixon has given little oxygen to Loomer\u2019s online hate, and her latest social media comeback proved no different. She dismissed Loomer\u2019s unfounded accusation and shot back with a nickname of her own.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, Jiggy Jig Saw,\u201d Nixon wrote, referring to the masked antagonist of the Saw horror franchise<\/a>, \u201cI can\u2019t even twerk. So of course I was only doing the electric slide. It\u2019s rather embarrassing that I lack those skills being a Black Woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nixon\u2019s national political profile has grown rapidly since she defeated Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman by double digits in August\u2019s Democratic primary election<\/a>, despite having significantly less funding. Nixon is also a Democratic Socialist, part of a leftist Democratic Party faction that has gained attention and key victories<\/a> since fellow Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani<\/a> won the New York City<\/a> mayoral election last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Last week\u2019s LGBTQ+ fundraiser was held at Renaissance Theater and featured pop music mixed by DJ Calvin House, a dance performance by Coco the Siren, and several guest speakers, according to Caribbean American Passport News Magazine<\/a>, a publication<\/a> focused on Florida\u2019s Caribbean communities.<\/p>\n

In her campaign, Nixon has pledged to support members of Florida\u2019s LGBTQ+ community and has earned support<\/a> from LGBTQ+ organizations in the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one should be targeted for who they are or who they love,\u201d Nixon wrote in a July 15 Instagram post<\/a> regarding an endorsement from Safeguarding American Values for Everyone, a Florida LGBTQ+ advocacy group. \u201cIn the U.S. Senate, I\u2019ll continue fighting to protect equality, defend our freedoms, and ensure every Floridian is treated with dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n
