Queen Sonja\u00a0is entering a new chapter in Norway\u2019s monarchy, and a change to her official status is drawing attention.\u00a0Following the death of her husband, King Harald V<\/a>, the royal is now listed under \u201cOther members of the Royal Family\u201d on the palace website, rather than among members of the Royal House.<\/p>\n

Her biography\u00a0makes clear, however, that she will continue\u00a0carrying\u00a0out official engagements representing the institution.\u00a0After 35 years beside Harald as queen consort, Sonja\u2019s position has shifted with the accession of their son, King Haakon VIII.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What has changed for Queen Sonja?<\/p>\n

According to Norwegian outlet Aftenposten, palace communications chief Guri Varpe confirmed that Sonja no longer uses the formal Norwegian styling \u201cHer Majesty.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Royal House now consists of King Haakon, Queen Mette-Marit and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra. Sonja retains her title of queen and remains part of the wider royal family. The distinction concerns her formal place within the institution.<\/p>\n

Sonja can therefore still be described as \u201cHer Majesty Queen Sonja\u201d in that context, wording that\u00a0continues to appear on\u00a0her official English biography.<\/p>\n

Her royal work continues:<\/p>\n

For Sonja, the change comes alongside a continuing public role. In its October 7 announcement about\u00a0the resumption of\u00a0engagements after court mourning ended on October 9, the palace explicitly confirmed that she would undertake official assignments representing the Royal House.<\/p>\n

A week later, she will open the Munch\u2013Picasso exhibition at Museo Picasso M\u00e1laga in Spain,\u00a0followed by a\u00a0visit\u00a0to\u00a0the Norwegian school in Benalm\u00e1dena on October 30.<\/p>\n
