STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 The NYPD Highway District\u2019s Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the fatal collision of an FDNY ambulance and a bicyclist in Graniteville, with the victim\u2019s identity still pending.<\/p>\n

The crash occurred at about 10:34 p.m. Monday night<\/a> at Christopher Lane and Richmond Avenue, according to police.<\/p>\n

Investigators determined that the ambulance was traveling south on Richmond Avenue and turning left onto eastbound Christopher Lane when it struck a male bicyclist riding against traffic in the northbound lane of Richmond Avenue, police said.<\/p>\n

The bicyclist was thrown onto the roadway and suffered severe head and body trauma. He was taken to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton where he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n

The 58-year-old driver remained at the scene and was not injured, according to the NYPD. Police could not confirm whether the ambulance was responding to an emergency or carrying a patient.<\/p>\n

Police have not yet released the bicyclist\u2019s identity.
