A $21 billion project funded by Japan will build two new GlobalFoundries semiconductor manufacturing facilities at its Malta location, which the company says will create 27,000 construction and planning jobs and more than 1,000 manufacturing jobs.<\/p>\n
GlobalFoundries announced the project in a statement released Wednesday, saying $10 billion will go toward construction of a 300mm semiconductor fab expected to become operational in 2029. The company intends to break ground on the first fab later this year. A second approximately $10 billion fab will follow.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The project “will accelerate trusted semiconductor manufacturing in the United States, strengthen critical supply chains and support growing demand across automotive, industrial and connected infrastructure markets,” the company stated. It added that “Japan will provide the investment,” and GlobalFoundries will contribute its technologies, skills and experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a bold new initiative for semiconductor manufacturing, bringing together the United States and Japan with GF\u2019s differentiated technology and decades of manufacturing expertise to accelerate trusted capacity in New York,\u201d said Tim Breen, CEO of GlobalFoundries.<\/p>\n
The agreement stems from the U.S. and Japan’s strategic trade and investment agreement announced in 2025, the company said.<\/p>\n
