The man accused of allegedly throwing his ex-girlfriend, while she was holding their 8-month-old baby, from the 15th-floor balcony of a Bronx building was arraigned Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Angel Carrasco<\/a>, is facing a litany of charges: attempted murder in the first degree, murder in the second degree, attempted murder in the second degree, manslaughter in the first degree, assault in the first degree and endangering the welfare of a child. <\/p>\n

Carrasco was arraigned by Judge Cary Fischer of The Bronx Criminal Court via video from the hospital. He was remanded and his next court date set for Nov. 4.<\/p>\n

Carrasco was taken for a psychiatric evaluation last Thursday, according to police sources. He smiled as he walked<\/a> from the police station to the patrol car, causing for a crowd to shout at him from across the street as the neighborhood reeled from the aftermath of the tragedy that shook an entire community. <\/p>\n

The New York Police Department arrested him last week after an extensive search related to the death of 23-year-old Nathaly Ramirez<\/a>.The baby miraculously survived the fall and is hospitalized.<\/p>\n

According to police sources, a close friend of the suspect provided information about his whereabouts.<\/p>\n

Attorney information for Carrasco was not immediately known. <\/p>\n

How did the events unfold?<\/p>\n

According to investigators, Ramirez was holding her baby when she was pushed from the balcony of an apartment on Olinville Avenue in the Allerton neighborhood early Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

Mother and daughter fell to the ground from the 15th floor.<\/p>\n

Ramirez was pronounced dead at a hospital, while her daughter is recovering. Authorities believe the mother’s body may have broken the baby’s fall, possibly contributing to her survival.<\/p>\n

“This terrible tragedy weighs heavily on every member of the team who worked on this case,” said U.S. Marshal Ricky J. Patel. “We owed it to the courageous mother who gave her life to save her daughter from a heartless individual.”<\/p>\n

Authorities confirmed that, according to witnesses, Nathaly pleaded for help before falling.<\/p>\n

According to sources, there was a history of domestic violence at Ramirez’s home, and police were seeking to question her ex-boyfriend after the fatal incident. Carrasco had been arrested in January for a domestic violence case, according to the sources.<\/p>\n

A witness who lives in the Allerville Arms apartment building reported hearing screams in the middle of the night, just before the cries alerted neighbors, who then found Ramirez’s body outside. A neighbor told our sister station NBC New York that she heard the young woman pleading with someone before she jumped from the balcony with her baby.<\/p>\n

“I heard her screaming, ‘Please don’t do this. My baby. You know my baby is scared. Look at her face,'” the neighbor said. “Suddenly, I heard a scream and saw something hit the ground.”<\/p>\n

A fellow student from Bronx Leadership Academy, who visited the makeshift memorial that was growing at the site, said he would remember the young mother as a kind person.<\/p>\n

“She always got along with everyone. She always talked to everyone,” he commented. He added that if she saw someone having a bad day, Ram\u00edrez would often “make jokes to cheer them up.”<\/p>\n
