An off-duty NYPD detective was stabbed 10 times by a pair of illegal immigrants<\/a> despite repeatedly identifying himself as a cop \u2013 then chased the thugs for two blocks while barefoot despite his injuries, Bronx prosecutors said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The revelation came as the two accused attackers \u2013 D\u2019Angelo Caraballo<\/a> and Sneinder Mejia \u2013 were arraigned on attempted murder<\/a> charges in the Oct. 2 assault on hero cop Jose Mercedes and ordered held without bail in Bronx court.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen defendant Mejia was stabbing him numerous times<\/a>, [Mercedes] attempted to place him under arrest,\u201d Bronx Assistant District Attorney Paul Irace said in court. \u201cHe used his training to stop this from happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the hero cop \u201cidentified himself several times, over six times, as a police officer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Irace said Mercedes chased the moped-riding duo until he felt weakened by massive blood loss.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we sit here today, more than two weeks later, he still does not have usage of his left hand and is recovering from that surgery,\u201d Irace told Judge Alvin Yearwood.<\/p>\n

A half-dozen NYPD detectives packed the courtroom.<\/p>\n

Mercedes was unloading items from his car when the two pulled up on a two-wheeler and demanded his chain<\/a>, sparking a scuffle with the 10-year veteran cop.<\/p>\n

\u201cI almost died,\u201d Mercedes said at a press conference earlier this week. \u201cI told them in English, I told them in Spanish that I was a police officer. They didn\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caraballo and Sneinder went on the run, prompting a police manhunt.<\/p>\n

Both had rap sheets but were repeatedly released without bail due to the state\u2019s sanctuary policies that forced local authorities to ignore federal immigration holds.<\/p>\n

The two, who snuck into the US from the Dominican Republic, wore Halloween masks during the attack and fled the state.<\/p>\n

The US Marshals eventually tracked the pair down to a basement recording studio in Massachusetts, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n

They were extradited to New York to face the charges.<\/p>\n

Officials at Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not immediately respond to a request for information on their current status.<\/p>\n
